Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Cohen.
Nathan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began performing at my Georgia hometown theater at the ripe old age of six. As I got older, I felt I wasn’t being offered enough opportunities in theater, so I created them myself. I co-founded Community Entertainment, a local theatre company, and used it to hone my skills as a director and choreographer. I went to college to study the art and moved to NYC in 2012 working professionally for different theatre companies, on and off Broadway.
In 2016, we finished production on our first project Here We Go Again, a short dance film that explores love and intimacy between couples in New York City. This film inaugurated my company, NCo Dance, which has now evolved into NCo Creations. NCo Creations is dedicated to educate through spotlighting contemporary cultural issues through a combination of music, film, dance, and theatre. We help up-and-coming performance artists tell their stories of their own personal struggles and provide opportunities to bring those stories to life and share them with others. We encourage artists to confront their fears and channel their emotions into their work because these things define us, they connect us, and ultimately, they make us human. Another important part of our mission is NCo Creations which is an extension that provides experiences to students of all ages in the performance art space. Students will be exposed to various forms of performance art to inform, empower & create connection within our communities.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle is understanding the needs of our communities and what we can offer as another nonprofit performance art corporation. I constantly ask the question, “If we were no longer a company, what deficit would our communities face?” As a young company, we’re continuously questioning our mission and continue allowing it to grow into filling that “void” in our PA communities.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with NCo Creations – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We are a multi-media and multi-faceted performance art company that has two components – the professional company and the EDU sect. We are by artists, for artists. Providing space for all to take risks. We also have our EDU component which we are excited to expand. We’re piloting virtual summer workshops led by artists who are currently out of work. The workshops are pay what you can, providing accessibility and affordability to students of all ages across the country. The workshops will be intimate and will be driven by engagement of students, so they move beyond an Instagram live!
One of our coolest projects is Boy Bye – Cabaret Series, which is an all-women cabaret focused on female empowerment. This is a quarterly cabaret that acts as our fundraiser. The next Boy Bye will be cast live on YouTube July 12, 5pm PT. RSVP at ncocreations.com/bb2
I’m proud that we have a diverse group of people bringing ideas across industries. Though we focus on PA, we learn from the world around us. It’s important that those who are involved in the art is worldly – this is how and where we gather stories we present to our audience.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like that our city has many dimensions to it. It’s vast, diverse, and large. I sometimes feel like we miss out on the sense of community because we are so spread apart, but that’s why NCo Creations is important in bringing our diverse communities together in the same space, whether in person or virtual.
