Meet Natasha Garrett of Roam Vintage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Garrett.

Natasha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Roam was born out of an endless love of the hunt for beautiful things with history. The idea was dreamed up on a trip to Nepal in 2015. While scouring the local markets there, a thought came to me that I need to pursue curating a shop on my own.

There was something within me that just said: “This is what you love to do, this is what you know how to do, so just go for it.” I’ve been working as a stylist in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco for years and have amassed a large personal collection of vintage.

Friends always ask me to find the pieces on my travels, so it really came with ease for me to first start selling.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Roam’s story has taken many twists and turns. Its taken me the last three years of false starts, transformations and building confidence to get to where I am today. I am still learning and growing as a business owner.

I have my hand in every facet of the process from sourcing, styling, marketing, shipping, and back-end business management. It isn’t easy but being patient and knowing when to ask for help is incredibly important.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Roam Vintage specializes in artfully curated vintage for the modern world wanderer. I want my customer to feel the history in each piece they buy from me and yet also feel excited to create their own stories in them. I make a point to really carefully select my pieces.

I never buy vintage that I wouldn’t personally love to wear, which makes it extremely hard to part with everything! With years of experience in the fashion industry, I’ve developed an eye for detail that I believe sets me apart from others. I pay special attention to quality, to interesting design choices and to the way a piece looks and feels on.

I’m proud to own a business within the fashion industry that is inherently sustainable. It feels really wonderful filling people’s closets with pieces that have no additional impact on the earth!

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in flea markets and estate sales. I come from a line of vintage collectors and dealers. It’s in my blood. Some of my first memories are scouring the streets of San Francisco with my mother, where I grew up, looking for furniture that people were throwing out and taking it home to repair and repaint and give it new life. I have always known that beauty is there if you’re willing to look for it.

As a kid, I was super creative. I loved to draw and paint and write poetry. I kept a lot of this personal as it was all more of a means of healing and discovery than it was for show. I was pretty introverted and soft-spoken as a child but very observant and curious about the world. I still am.
