Meet Delia Hickman of Momma Loves Fashion

Today we’d like to introduce you to Delia Hickman.

Delia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After working in the finance/banking industry for many years after college, I decided to “quit my day job” to spend more time with my kids and pursue something that I was really passionate about. I’ve always loved fashion ever since I was a little girl. My dream had always been to move to NY and study fashion design, but my parents wanted me to stay close to home and study business, so that’s what I did.

After quitting the 9-5 job, I took every photography class I could take and started running a part-time photography business because photography is another one of my passions. It was part-time because my full-time job was being a Mom. After a while, I realized that although I love photography, I still wasn’t doing something that I was crazy about. That’s when I decided that I would pray about my next steps in life. This led me to discover the world of fashion blogging.

At the time I literally only followed one fashion blogger and was not even aware of how huge the fashion blogger world was, however, I decided that I wanted to try it out and I did just that! I first began styling my own outfits and taking my own photos. Thankfully since I had experience in photography, I saved a ton of money by not having to hire a photographer every week.

I still remember the first time I ever started posting photos on Instagram. I was freaking out, I felt so nervous and wanted to throw up! I was so scared of what others would think! Little by little that fear began to disappear because I decided that I would rather do something with a little fear than not do it at all and regret it for the rest of my life. Plus, at the end of the day, who cares what people think right? You gotta love them anyway.

Ever since I began my fashion blog (and social media), I’ve literally had to step out of my comfort zone so many times that I cannot even count anymore! But I’ve found that this is so healthy and has helped me grow as a person a lot!

After some time, brands started reaching out to me for various collaborations, and today I get to work with some of the most amazing brands out there. Of course, I still have some brands on my vision/prayer board that I want to work with in the future. One of my goals and dreams when I first started my blog was to someday be able to make it to New York Fashion Week. I finally made it last year and it was SO exciting! So basically I’m so thankful for all the opportunities that I’ve been given because of my platform.  I’m also thankful for all the lives I get touch and also all the new friends I’ve made!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve always promised myself that the minute this is not fun, I’ll stop doing it. It hasn’t been a smooth road because it is A LOT of work. It’s not just posting on Instagram. There’s a lot of background work that has to be done, and I don’t have assistance quite yet, so I do everything myself. Everything, I write and edit my blog posts, record and edit my YouTube videos, edit my own photos, attend events, etc., but I’m thankful for every second of it because it does give me the flexibility of creating my own work schedule and spending time with my family. Although, they complain sometimes that I work too much LOL!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Momma Loves Fashion – what should we know?
Momma Loves Fashion is a place where women (and men) can come to get all the latest in fashion trends and style tips! I also share some skincare and beauty tips from time to time. Its a place where I might also share personal things that are going on in my life and a place where I like to encourage and motivate others.

If you follow me on social media, you’ll see that I post Outfit of the day ideas and try to link every product that I’m wearing so people can shop my outfit! On my YouTube, I like to talk about designer handbags or other designer items. I have a slight designer handbag addiction so I can literally go on and on if you get me started on that subject!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Faith. I don’t do anything without first praying about it. I have faith that God will guide my steps and make everything that I do successfully. Basically, without faith, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing because I know that God truly cares about the things we care about it. He placed those desires in our heart for a reason. Whatever it is wether its fashion, sports, art, being a full time mom, starting a new business, whatever it is that you love, I think He placed that dream in your heart and is ready to help your dream come to pass.

Also as I mentioned earlier when I have fear about something it usually means that I’m being stretched and it’s time to step out of my comfort zone again. For example, the other day I was asked to speak about fashion at a women’s breakfast in front of 220 women. That freaked me out, and I was like, “what?! Me? No, I can’t do this!”

I decided it was time to step out of my comfort zone once again and went ahead and did it anyway, because like I said… it’s better to do something with fear than to not do it at all and regret it for the rest of your life. Who cares what people think.
