Meet Miu Haiti

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miu Haiti.

Hi Miu, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was brought up by creative parents. My dad is a sax player and plays with lots of major Haitian “konpa” bands, and my mom is a seamstress. I used to create outfits for my dolls with leftover fabrics. My father used to host church choir rehearsals and songwriting sessions at home. He took me to some of his band’s rehearsals and recording sessions too. In school, I was very into literature, drama class, dance and drawing class. I think I always had the music in me, I was always humming some melody, got me in trouble at school sometimes. As a teen I became a petite model for a local fashion designer, it was my Entryway to the show business, my friend who was an event promoter at that time convinced me to participate in a songwriting contest and I did. I was in a last 10 finalists, we went on a national tour (Haiti) and I’ve been hooked since then. I made my way in a male-dominated industry with very limited resources as an independent artist, published my first album “Unexpected” and many singles and collaborations followed, which “Is This Love” is my most recent.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve learned not to dwell on the negative. I worked hard on myself to let go of the past. Things are ever-changing in this industry, you always have to be ready to adapt. Tyler Perry said something in one of his speeches that stuck with me “Climb and maintain”. I stay consistent and focus on the goal one step at a time. There’s no mistake, there’s no failure, only lessons.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve always listened to all kinds of music, Latin, French ballads, jazz, classical, dancehall, Reggae, pop; later as a teen I was drawn to rock, hip hop and R&B. I appreciate good music in any format, therefore I like to create freely, without the boundaries of the concept of “Music Genres”.

I believe my sound to be Contemporary, eclectic, heartfelt, but I’m more comfortable letting the public define what it sounds and feels like to them.

This new song, “Is This Love” is inspired by personal experience. I’m an introvert but I’m a very loving being. LOVE is a vast word, unfortunately, in our society we tend to enclose it in the “romantic” realm. Sometimes you’re not sure if you love someone as a friend or as a potential partner. You wanna be mindful of that person’s feelings, so you have to sort out, even detangle, your own. I literally found myself in the position where I had to ask myself this specific question, it helps with managing expectations.

I deeply believe that my purpose to create and share my music with the world. Hopefully, that can help someone feel seen and understood.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
My mantra is to focus on putting one foot in front of the other towards the goal even when I can’t see what’s in the horizon. Consistency is key. Will Smith said it best: “You don’t set out to build a wall. You don’t say ‘I’m going to build the biggest, baddest, greatest wall that’s ever been built. ‘ You don’t start there. You say ‘I’m gonna lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid,’ and you do that every single day, and soon you have a wall”.
