Today we’d like to introduce you to Miguel Osuna.

Miguel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I originally studied architecture in Mexico, graduated there and in the mid-eighties, I moved to LA and started working in the design/architecture industry. I did that through the end of the 90’s. I did design work for several industries, including, towards the end, the entertainment industry. My last projects as a full-time designer included film and TV set design. All along, and since my chilhood, I loved to draw, paint and create in general. At the beginning of the 2000’s, I decided to try and make art full time. Through a series of art openings, participation in shows and private commissions, I was able to build a fine art practice that continues to this day.
I am fortunate to have seen my work welcomed by the general public and have had the support of collectors, both private and corporate. Curiously enough, my work has been featured again by the entertainment industry. My paintings have been shown extensively in TV and movie productions, as well as TV commercials.
In the last 5 years, my work has been shown in galleries and museums both in the US and my native Mexico. Currently, I am working on a solo exhibition that opens May 16th in Italy, where I am writing these lines from.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Having a full-time art practice is always tough. Technically, you are a free agent, a freelancer, and naturally, keeping the sales flow is always a challenge. But I would say, doing your work with consistency, dedication, faith in yourself and a business sense will help in the endeavor. I’ve been personally very fortunate, also with the support of friends, professionals, and companies whose relations I’ve been cultivating over the years.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Miguel Osuna Art Studio – what should we know?
I have a full-time art practice. My ‘specialty’ would be to create artwork that I hope is unique, engaging, original and connects with people on an emotional basis. My work is contemporary. I started doing contemporary style landscapes that were heavily inspired by my surroundings (LA). Over the years, my art production moved to the abstract realm, which is what I mostly do.

I was known for a few years as the “Freeway Artist”. My landscapes were all about transportation and movement in the city. My current work is mostly abstractions based on my own calligraphy. I pride myself on my work ethics, which I learned and honed while being a designer. I apply principles of dedication, consistency, professionalism that I learned in college and in the design field. The practice in an art studio can be completely free, but I am convinced that discipline applies to any human endeavor. I strive to present myself and my work on a platform of professionalism and dependability.

Of course, you have to back all this with work that genuinely represents your ideas and represents them well.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Credit where credit is due:
Supportive parents – always encouraging my creative efforts.
Supportive family – especially one of my aunts (passed) who taught me a few basics of painting when I was a child.
Supportive friends – always there for me.
Supportive partner – encouraging in a field where, most would agree, the odds of success are tough.
