Meet Mervyn Titus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mervyn Titus.

Mervyn, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I pursued still photography from a young age and I honed my skills by trial and error. I was always into creative art forms and music has been a constant anchor of self-expression for me. I felt the convergence of my efforts of photography & music and began generating content in the music industry. A music video I photographed was listed in the ‘Top 10 Indian Music Videos of 2017’ by Rolling Stones India. In a way these experiences set the base for what I eventually decided to pursue as a career. I’ve always liked painting or taking stills and now I shoot films. It is just about making images, only in different forms. Cinematography as an art appealed to my soul and therefore, I arrived at New York Film Academy, LA to pursue my dreams. After having graduated from Film school, I could say I always had my heart at the right place and later I was able to equip myself with the technical know-how. Ever since then I’ve been a Director of Photography on a number of films and I’ve evolved as a professional camera operator.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t easy, but rather it felt like it took forever to reach where I am today! I got hoarded into a Business school as an obvious option after studying commerce in high school. Visual arts were not the most viable career propositions, considering the part of the world I come from, particularly when one is born in a business family. Despite this I continued my photographic endeavors throughout my three years of college. In this time, I was able to hone my skills. I believe everything happens for a reason and everything comes to fulfillment in the right time.

Mervyn Titus – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in the camera department both as an operator and a 1st AC. Being able to study light, blocking and compositions has helped me be in the company of like minded filmmakers, mostly directors. I no longer aspire to shoot cinematic expressions but rather serve the story and forever be in servitude of cinema.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Being listed in the top 5 of the top 10 Indian music videos of 2017 by Rolling Stones India. Also being part of films, I’ve operated on that are now on Amazon Prime Video US & UK.
