Meet Melissa Renee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Renee.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always had a creative side and luckily, I was able to tap into my creative juices while working as a stylist. I switched gears in 2014 and went back to school to receive formal art training. I have a business side to me as well as a creative side. On the DISC personality profile, I am dominant/conscientious with a core of creativity. I refer to myself as a California-born artist with roots in the south. I’ve had the opportunity to live the best of both worlds… city life and country living. Today, I’m based out of Irvine where I create paintings, wallpaper murals, textiles, and home decor accessories.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest struggles was trying to figure out where to start…where to concentrate my efforts. I reached out to so many people asking for advice. At some point, it all starts to make sense and the dots start to connect.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I mostly paint with tinted resin on wood panels. I love the reflective properties that resin has to offer. Not only am I known for serene seascapes, I am also known for my vibrantly pigmented abstract work, wallpaper murals, textiles, and home decor accessories. When painting, I start with a primed wood panel. I mix various inks, pastes, micas, and powdered pigments into the resin. I like to use a variety because they all have a unique reaction when added into the resin. A torch and heat gun are used to manipulate and move the resin around the board. Each piece requires multiple layers of resin to achieve depth and dimension; therefore, it can take some time to complete a piece. What I love the most about working with resin is its unpredictability. Being able to manipulate it into something beautiful excites me. I’m most proud of the quality of work that I produce. I take special care when creating each piece and use only the best materials. My style is unique and the quality of my work sets it apart from others.

How do you define success?
I always say that success is not attached to a dollar amount but by the happiness that’s felt in the heart.
