Meet Maureen (Moe) Sherwood (O’Brien-Sherwood)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maureen (Moe) Sherwood (O’Brien-Sherwood).

Hi Maureen (Moe), can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been a professional Makeup Artist for over 35 years. I was born and raised in Toronto Canada and relocated to Los Angeles with my family about 5 years ago. My husband was transferred with his job. I had to leave my beloved job as a Senior (Lead) MakekeUp Artist from Canada”s largest broadcast network CTV. I held a staff Makeup position there for 30 years. I was thrilled to come to LA as I have three brothers here and my husband’s family are all in and from the US. I was so excited to start a new chapter in my life and career, thinking that due to my years of diversified experience, I would hit the ground running. It didn’t happen at all like that for me. I basically had to reinvent myself and start over, networking and taking what makeup jobs I could get. It was just like when I was just starting out in the business. Something I surely didn’t expect at this stage of my life and career. I won’t lie, there were moments where I was very discouraged and questioned what was going to happen career-wise, but I persevered and stuck to my convictions and paying jobs started to happen. I have done a number of short films, commercials, digital content and shows and am the personal Hair and Makeup Artist for one of the top YouTube personalities.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes. One other issue since moving to LA, which I have never experienced, is having to play down my years of experience as I come across too old. What a piece of paper says and who I am. are 2 very different people.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am well known for my strong work ethic and creativity. I have certifications in MakeUp, Hair and Special Effects Makeup. Over my years at CTV, I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with countless “A lister” celebrities which I hold dear to my heart. Since leaving Canada, I have worked on a number of Horror/Thriller movies which I love as I get to be completely creative and use all of my skills. Many of these films have won multiple awards. What sets me apart from others, aside from being able to apply a makeup that won’t fade or wear off for over 8 hours, is with so many years of experience, there is no challenge that I won’t take on and do with confidence. I also can work extremely fast under challenging circumstances which is an asset. I always bring a very positive and upbeat outlook to set and am very good with people, even under difficult circumstances. What I am most proud of is the feedback I get about how I make people feel, not only on the outside but on the inside. I couldn’t ask for a better compliment than that.

What does success mean to you?
When I leave a set or a job feeling that I gave it all, made a difference and delivered above and beyond, with a happy director and cast/client.
