Meet Marti Alonzo of 6.tiff in Koreatown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marti Alonzo.

Marti, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in the Philippines. My family relocated to the U.S. when I was 4 years old. I grew up in the suburbs, southeast of Los Angeles. Growing up I wasn’t the best student in school. I would always draw and scribble in class and I would always get in trouble. Living in a Filipino household, my mother always expected me to do my best and excel in school. She wanted me to have a career in the medical field like my two older sisters. I always knew that wasn’t for me. I’ve always leaned towards the artistic side of things. After high school I attended Film school, worked a couple of gigs, and landed a job as an editor and cinematographer for a local production company.

Has it been a smooth road?
Growing up, I faced a lot of discrimination. Living in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood I was always the odd one out. I remember in high school everyone automatically assumed I was passing all my classes since I’m Asian. I actually failed all my classes. I remember the whole class laughing because my teacher had made a joke about how all Asians are supposed to be smart and I wasn’t. It was ok though, I laughed with them.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m Marti Alonzo also known as 6.tiff on Instagram. I’m a visual artist specializing in motion and still photography. I currently shoot with an analogue medium format camera. I process and scan my negatives in house which lets me have full control of my photos. What sets me apart from others is that I’m versatile. I don’t have one specific style. I photograph a wide range of subjects.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
If you’re a creative I think Los Angeles is the perfect place to be. The people you meet and the variety of cultures and styles here is a great source of inspiration.
