Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret Hyde.
Margaret, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was raised in Memphis, TN surrounded by music and art, in particular, the work of William Eggleston. At ten years old, I got my first camera and for the first time realized that a photo could be more than a snapshot or captured moment. I realized that a photo could be about light, shadow, and pattern and that it could be art.
My life has taken me down many roads. I have written and published 14 children’s books and produced an Academy Nominated Documentary, “The Witness from the Balcony of Room 306,” but all along the way I had my camera with me and was created art.
In 2012, I started doing macro photography of bits and pieces that I found and collected, i.e., shells, scrap metal, beach glass, weeds, and dandelions. I created tiny sculptures and photographed them using natural light, water and time/decay.
I transform these overlooked things into an ephemeral talisman. I have shown my work in solo and group shows nationally for the last seven years. You can see my work at margarethyde.com.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. I have had many successes and big failures, but I keep moving forward. When I am shooting photographs, I am totally present and know I am doing what I am meant to do.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
My photographs are works of art and unlike anything else. I create miniature sculptures of found objects such as shells, scrap metal, beach glass, weeds, and dandelions and transform them using natural light, water, and decay. Each image is an ephemeral talisman that tells a story and captures the mystery and beauty of the unseen.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is being able to get up every day and create art and be in nature. There is also the moments when people connect with my work, and it makes them feel, think and wonder. Shows and sales are also forms of success.
