Meet Marco Colucci of Marco Colucci Photo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marco Colucci.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Marco. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was a child I had an extreme interest in taking photos with my mother’s camera. It was mostly because I was forbidden from touching it, but the rebel child in me would say “Do it anyway, Marco” I loved photographing my cousin doing jumps near the house next door that was being framed from the foundation. We would make jumps and just get into mischief. Skateboarding, biking, and trouble was my inspiration back then. When I had my first job, I saved up some money for a camera and kept at it, I was too young to realize it could be a career though, so it was all just for fun.

I’ll skip to college, I was going to school at a community college full time, with no interest in anything academic related, at all, I would skip out on every class except my dark room elective and would spend hours in there developing film. That’s when I knew it was something that could transform from a passion to a career. I ended up attending Hallmark Institute of Photography and from there I started assisting photographers in LA, and gradually acquired clients.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The first 6 months or so in LA were brutal – no real-life experience really didn’t want to get a full-time job, hours on my laptop email photographers and networking in a place I had no friends. It was all from scratch. I am originally from San Diego so it was pretty hard and took a toll on me.

It’s all apart of the process though, and I’m glad I stuck through it, it taught me that if you really want it, you have to go out and get it. It’s a little smoother now, but there are still challenges – the life of a freelancer is always working 24/7.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in Lifestyle and Production Stills for film sets. I really love photographing small local businesses/ entrepreneurs. It keeps me motivated to keep on going, even when things are tricky, and what is really cool is to see that we all need each other to thrive.

The past two years I’ve also had the privilege of backpacking India and Vietnam, which were such life-changing experiences, that opened my eyes to a world I never knew existed until I immersed myself into the culture. The human race is special when you have an open mind to the way people live all over the world.

What were you like growing up?
I was a curious kid growing up, didn’t like to take things too seriously either – which got me into some trouble sometimes. But I really loved/and still love talking to people and exchanging stories, experiences and just getting to know people. The human connection is a crazy thing, we can all learn so much from each other.
