Meet Malik Rose

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malik Rose.

Malik, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been musically inclined, but I never took music seriously until 2017. When I was younger, I used to play the drums for all of the family functions, fill in for my uncle’s band, etc. Let’s just say I got very distracted along the way but in the end music came back full circle and became the focal point in my life again. It all started by me writing raps in my room and freestyling for my friends that would always ask me to rap. Sometime in 2016, I started going to open mics. I went just to peep the scene and listen, but I eventually got on the mic after going a few times. I got really good feedback and also got invited to other shows to perform and things took off from there. I released my first project Detox on Sept. 13, 2017. I shot a cover video for a J Cole song while I was working on music and performing in Japan which led to airplay overseas and even bigger opportunities. I kept working and performing while working on my sophomore project Imagine Forever. The whole time I was traveling and performing my music I had been planning on my next move. Since 2015 I had a strong feeling I was supposed to be in LA, so I moved here July 7, 2018 and released Imagine Forever July 15th, 2018 to end that chapter of my life and start a new one in Los Angeles.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, it hasn’t been a smooth road. I lost a lot of relationships, found out who my real friends were, and learned a lot about myself and how people / the world is along the way. One of the biggest obstacles I’ve faced was recording while overseas. I feel like the vibe of my first two projects were so simple, straight forward, and organic because of the lack of resources while overseas. It’s not easy finding a studio who works with American artist. Good equipment is also kind of hard to find as well. Either way, I made the best out of my situation and got two really dope bodies of work and a few singles out of it.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory would probably be hangin with my homies I grew up with. We would play basketball and football in the streets, get in trouble, and do other kids stuff.
