Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie SanFilippo.
Maggie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m originally from Chicago but have lived in California for nine years. I come from a family of artists and creatives. My grandpa used to be a billboard painter, which I’ve always thought is pretty cool. I started off working in wardrobe for commercials and TV as well as having a business restoring Mid Century furniture and selling at local flea markets. In the past few years, I started to work on my art more seriously and have been getting a great response from it.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes, I would say in terms of my art career, it has been pretty smooth. I think the only obstacle I’ve really had to face is my own resistance. I used to hesitate on posting my art but I learned to just put it out there even if it’s not perfect, otherwise, I would never show my work! And embracing that attitude has really helped me develop my style and take my self seriously, which has helped establish me as an artist as well.
Please tell us about Magz Marz.
I’d say I’m best known for my portrait illustrations and the T-shirts I make from them as well. My T-shirts have been worn by contestants on NBC’s The Voice a few times and I work with stylists and costume designers developing designs that are needed for any given project. The commissions I do are usually based off my contour style portraits but I do larger abstract paintings as well.
Last year, a group of friends and I built an interactive art installation called “The Vortex” for Desert Daze music festival. We will be doing it again at Desert Daze this year and I look forward to exploring more sculptural projects like these.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I like to live with no regrets but if I had to, I would worry less and just continue being persistent with my art, and grateful for whatever stage I am at.
