Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Escribano.
Mark, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I studied art photography in college, which led to art filmmaking. After that, I didn’t do either of those for work for many years. I didn’t have any serious commercial intentions with either medium and was more interested in experimentation than selling anything to anyone or working for money in those fields. It wasn’t until after I completed my first documentary feature that I entered the market side of the platforms.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road is necessarily never smooth as far as I can tell. And hopefully, it’s ongoing. Which is just to say that evolving as an artist and embracing new challenges is embedded in the experience and a large part of what makes it a privilege to pursue as a vocation or career. Of course, along with that, there’s always the unavoidable, ever-present desire for the road to finally, if just for a little bit, get slightly smoother.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
I know there’s a saying about luck being more about preparation combined with timing and/or opportunity to create the illusion of fortune and I tend to believe that. There’s been unfortunate events that have ended up enabling me and many fortuitous developments I’m grateful for which I don’t believe have come to much. It’s difficult to pinpoint any unique turning point or allow myself to place too much regard on the momentary over the ongoing.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The ability to still get excited and be naive about things I’ve done before.
