Meet Los Angeles Makeup Artist: Jessica Zepeda

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Zepeda.

Jessica , please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always loved makeup. I started as an esthetician In Utah and moved to LA to go to beauty & SFX makeup school at MUD and begin my career.

Has it been a smooth road?
Freelance is tough. It’s all about making connections, working long hours and can get rejected from prospective jobs for someone who charges less because they don’t value their job.

When you look back, what are you most proud of?
Watching Million Dollar Matchmaker on TV after working on the show for 3 months. We lived in a casino while filming and it was my first experience doing makeup on well-known celebrities for a well-known tv show.

Every story has ups and downs. What were some of the downs others might not be aware of?
There are moments where you may struggle Doing freelance work. Always stay positive and work with a smile on your face. down t let the struggles bring you down and keep your eye on the prize.

Is LA a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is the perfect place for a makeup artist at any career level. I moved here to go to makeup school originally at Make Up Designory. They helped me find local gigs doing free work until I had enough connections to get referrals for bigger gigs and jobs. It’s very competitive out here for makeup artists but what’s important is to make friends within the community so if a makeup artist is already booked for a job, she can refer you to the producers.
