Liraz, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2015, after my 3-year-old daughter asked me why I was throwing away a flower bouquet, I went to a local nursery to look for a sustainable alternative that would fit my busy lifestyle. That’s when I immediately fell in love with succulents. After spending a few weeks looking at the different types of succulents, I noticed that being surrounded by plants made me feel happier and, overall, more relaxed.
A year later, I founded Lula’s Garden, an innovative concept of gifting – succulents that are potted in a self-sustaining gift box – with the sole mission to gift the wellness that I’ve felt to others.
Soon after launching the website, I received an email from Real Simple magazine informing me that one of their editors received our garden as a gift and showed it to the team, who then decided to include us in the holiday issue as “Best Holiday Gifts Under $50.” From this point forward, everything was a whirlwind! We started receiving thousands of orders during the holiday season, including large corporate orders! Since then, the business has continued to grow exponentially, mostly through word-of-mouth.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The most challenging part of building this business was during the R&D process. Since I had a brand new concept, product development wasn’t exactly straightforward. During this stage, all of my focus was put towards perfecting the gifting experience. I wanted the gift to be an exciting and memorable moment, yet at the same time, be functional. It ended up taking months to find the correct formula of adhesive that could hold the potted succulent in place during shipment while being gentle enough so that it wouldn’t damage the plant!

Lula’s Garden is a succulent gifting company. Our eco-friendly succulent gardens arrive potted in a self-sustaining gift box, uniquely designed to serve as a planter and create a joyful experience – open and enjoy!
Over a short period, and with nearly zero dollars spent in marketing, Lula’s Garden has almost tripled its revenue year after year since launching in 2016.
Lula’s Garden has been featured in various lifestyle publications for special gift moments like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, holidays, birthdays, and more.
We’ve also attracted major corporate clients like Google, Facebook, State Farm, Bloomingdales, LinkedIn, and many more. We mainly credit word-of-mouth marketing for our massive growth, which is quite unusual given the short time frame that it has all happened in. For reference, we’re already estimating that our daily shipment loads will be in the thousands during the holiday season!
We pride ourselves in being the only plant delivery company that focuses on gifting, for both personal and business occasions, and not for self-consumption. Not to mention, we’re the only gifting company that delivers live plants that are potted inside a gift box. In other words, it’s an entirely new concept!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As of right now, we’re focused on adding a personalized aspect to the gifting experience. We recently launched a new product, the Personalized Garden – a garden that you can add your recipient’s initials to, which is our most personal gift so far!
All of our gardens can be customized with a cover sleeve for different occasions! In the near future, we’re already planning to add more occasions, as well as offering additional garden sizes. At the beginning of October, we will be launching our holiday collection. Spoiler alert; this collection includes a new range of succulents and designs for the 2020 holiday season!
