Meet Lindsay Brazil of Toxic Love Photography in Studio City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Brazil.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It has been 5 years since I got my Nikon, 4 years since I started Toxic Love Photography and a little over a year since I started Tainted Lust Photography. In my mind, I have always been a creative person. I always loved drawing and writing when I was younger. When I was growing up my dad, Scott Brazil, was the family photographer. He was always taking pictures of family events and important happenings through my life. When I was 15 he passed away from Lou Gehrig’s disease, more commonly known as ALS. After his passing, I took over as the family photographer. I enjoyed it but didn’t find my passion in photography until I started going to school at Pierce College as an equine major. At this point, I just had a tiny point and shoot camera but it wasn’t fast enough to deal with the speed these horses had. My mother was kind enough to by me my trust Nikon. I started going to horse showing at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center every weekend as well as the many events that the Pierce Equine Program holds. I have been in love ever since.

When I first started photography it was mostly of animals. Six months into having my Nikon I took a wonderful class at LACMA led by Loretta Ayeroff. Each week we would focus on different components of photography and different style – architecture, landscape, portraits, etc. We would have homework in which we could take pictures that represented the class we had to the best of our abilities and then they would get critiqued. Once we hit the portrait portion of the class, I fell in love. I had never even thought about taking pictures of people – mainly because at the time I wasn’t what you would call a big people person. To this day, I still have anxiety with people and usually get anxious but I absolutely love what I do and couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

I am so happy I found my passion in photography. The people I work with consistently are life changes – my little creative family. Always working to created art and inspire each other. Photography is my happy place. Photoshoots have been my saviors for so many days. It is a time where I can block out whatever is going on in the world and focus on creating art.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part, the road has been pretty smooth. Everyone has their struggles in reaching their dreams though. I have severe social anxiety so in the beginning and still sometimes to this day the idea of photographing people and working with brands for a living was a bit daunting. Over the past few years, I have really worked on putting myself out there when it comes to working with new people and cool brands. If I hadn’t done that I would not have been able to work with such brands as Ink Addict, Sullen Clothing, My Intent, IHeartRaves, Arm the Animals, etc.
