Meet Lillian Jackson and Melissa Mason of Brown Skin Brunchin’ in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lillian Jackson and Melissa Mason.

Lillian and Melissa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Our journey began more as a personal one. As we got older, we felt that it became increasingly difficult to connect with others in genuine ways. As time went on, we learned we weren’t the only ones who felt that way. As a child, you just talk to anyone around for the most part.

As you grow and learn from experiences, you begin to limit yourself in various ways, sometimes without even being consciously aware of it. That filters into who and what you allow yourself to be open to. Then, you find yourself around the same people, doing the same things, whether it’s fulfilling or not. We wanted to find a way to break that routine in order to build stronger and more meaningful connections and help others do the same. Over the last year, Brown Skin Brunchin’ has helped thousands of women around the country do just that.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been some bumps in the road, but overall it has been an awesome journey. Some of the struggles we faced were figuring out the proper way to market our concept, as well as timing behind launching our brand, and personal uncertainty. We had to plan out strategies to incorporate social media and learn how to maximize its impact. We had to learn more about website platforms and how to best utilize internet resources.

With the cultural tensions in our society today, we had to be consciously aware of possible backlash surrounding what we chose to name our group. We had to conquer our own feelings of hesitation regarding whether or not our concept would be accepted. Due to rapid growth beyond our initial expectations, we had to adjust to meet demand, and incorporate the use of organizers to help with hosting brunches. We chose to face our challenges head-on, and we are ecstatic about how open people have been to our concept. We’ve learned that it was something that many were looking for, and was much-needed for our women.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Brown Skin Brunchin’ – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Brown Skin Brunchin’ specializes in bringing together women of color in an unconventional, yet fun way. We are most known for turning complete strangers into life-long friends. Each month we host brunches in various cities across the US, connecting women from all backgrounds.

We also curate group travel itineraries that give members an opportunity to connect not only with those in their individual cities but with members across the country as well. Brown Skin Brunchin’s goal is to foster healthy relationships amongst women of color in a positive and uplifting setting. We support one another, encourage one another, and most of all, enjoy our time with one another through food, fun, and travel. There’s no better way to expand your personal, as well as professional, circles.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
For the future, we are looking to continue to expand to other cities. We have been very well received in the LA area and would love to expand to numerous cities around the US. We are also expanding the scope of our group to incorporate giving back to the communities that we live and to also use our platform as a means for other local businesses to bring awareness to their brand. We have been fortunate enough to meet a lot of entrepreneurs at our brunches and we want to enable them to connect with other Brunchers that could benefit from their products/services.
