Today we’d like to introduce you to Liang Zhang.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Ceramics is one of the most ancient and long-lasting materials and tools, the clay itself doesn’t change much, however, the way the world changes leads people’s thought on functional crafts and nonfunctional arts to branched ways. It keeps me thinking about what is the difference between functional and nonfunctional, or a larger conception to me, design and art. Ceramics born from functional food and drink containers, and tiles, grows to nowadays sculptures and installations, people give them so much more than just a thing. Sometimes, I spend several hours in the studio but make nothing. Just play with clay, I love the feeling of touching and smelling the clay, the cool temperature makes me calm down and the scent of the dirt provides me a space to meditate.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m a ceramic artist, I use clay to make paintings, sculptures, and installations. Most of my works are unglazed, remaining the original color of the fired bisque. After a long time questioning, I found that usually, I can not come up with an idea of why I should glaze them, they don’t need extra colors to show my thoughts, and they are not functional that I have to glaze them to be food safe. Every time when I make something, I ask myself, is it necessary? does my work need it? I love to give lives to my ceramic objects and write something as if I am that artwork. It is something I work with day to day, there is always a conversation created between us, talking to my work and talking back to myself, it helps my understanding my idea and thoughts more.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
I think the biggest challenge for me is to find a place to show. A curator is necessary to gather the artists and the proper artworks to make the show happen.
