Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexa Gluck.
Lexa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My love for acting began at age seven, when I started performing in a children’s theater in Boston. Years later, I followed the likes of Gloria Steinem and Sylvia Plath to Smith College, where I received my BA in Theater Arts and had a life changing four years. After college, I trained at The A.R.T Institute at Harvard University and the Moscow Arts Theatre School, receiving my much anticipated Master of Fine Arts. Even with my extensive training in classical acting, the decision to move to Los Angeles and pursue a career in film in television still seemed incredibly daunting. But ultimately, I made the decision to follow my dreams to LA. And while my training has served me well professionally, it’s often been the personal life decisions I’ve made in pursuit of my goals where I’ve found the most growth.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As to be expected, my journey from ‘lifelong student’ in Boston to ‘working actor’ in LA has definitely had its highs and lows. Coming out here from school, I had big goals and unrealistic expectations; and I quickly learned that my MFA was more of a novelty than an ace in the hole. It’s truly been a process to stay sane and centered within the downtime between projects. Nonetheless, the inconsistencies have pushed me to take responsibility for shaping my own career and creating opportunities for myself in meaningful ways.
More personally, my big move was preceded by the divorce of my parents, which as an only child, definitely had its effect on my emotional health. Yet in my moments of discomfort, and with the help of those around me, I’ve matured, creating healthier relationships with my parents, individually. Today I’m proud to say that I have strong, loving, albeit complex, relationships with both of them that deeply inspire my work as an actor.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Since signing with the incomparable DaVida Chanel Smith at Etcetera & Company, I’ve been fortunate enough to play strong, unique characters on so many incredibly creative and diverse sets. From playing an intersex robot on 8 episodes of Noah Hawley’s Legion, starring Dan Stevens. To working with Deon Taylor on his forthcoming female-driven thriller, Fatale, starring Academy Award winner, Hilary Swank. To most recently, co-starring in a sci-fi short with film veteran Eric Roberts. Still, my desire to create is insatiable and has led me to develop my own vehicles with my creative partner, writer/director David Hartstone. In the past three years, we’ve made several short films together and are gearing up for our biggest project to date. What a ride.
What were you like growing up?
As a kid I was incredibly shy, well mannered, and very disciplined. But the moment I stepped onstage, I never looked back. Higher education was always my game plan; and while I’m super grateful for my foundation, moving to LA helped me realize that there’s no comparison to the magic of learning by doing. To every up and coming young actor, believe in yourself, stay focused, and don’t wait for anyone to make your dreams come true. Whether you’re creating content alone in your room or making projects with your friends, the power is within YOU.
