Lauren, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had an interest in marketing – it started when I was attending Florida State University studying Economics. I saw an opportunity to combine my love of economics and sales through marketing. After completing my MBA from Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business, I wanted to use my new knowledge and skills to help companies that needed it most. I started working with local non-profits that needed help with marketing but couldn’t afford services from the bigger agencies. I founded my company BiteSized Consulting in 2017 with the goal of helping non-profits, start-ups, & BIPOC-owned businesses bring their companies to life through affordable and relevant marketing services. BiteSized started as a way to hone in on my marketing skills, and it has truly become an amazing opportunity to help those that need it most.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a windy, bumpy road at best – the Lombard Street of businesses! At first, I was basically working as a volunteer. Once I established my business, I learned how to manage my time, organize my projects, and gain more clients through word of mouth and social media. When the pandemic started, I noticed I had an influx of business because everyone needed digital marketing strategies to keep open communication lines with their customers. I’ve been able to help companies start websites, develop social media strategies, and learn more about their customers in the wake of these unprecedented times. It’s a great feeling knowing that the hard work (and clientless-months) have been worth it. One of the best parts about being a business owner is being a forever learner. The more open you are to learning from your experiences and improving your business, the more successful you become.
BiteSized Consulting – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
BiteSized Consulting is an LA-based, digital marketing consultancy helping start-ups, non-profits, and BIPOC-owned businesses create a unique connection with their audience. We specialize in creating digital marketing strategies including social media and email marketing. One of the things that I’m most proud of as a company is the relationship that we have with our clients. I love that so many of them return to us for follow up services. To me, that’s a sign of a successful business. Our dedication to helping as many people as we can is really what sets us apart. We want our clients to build successful businesses, and digital media gives all companies an equal footing. Doing more research on a particular audience allows a company to speak to their target audience or tribe directly. Building that connection not only increases sales but also brand loyalty, and they can do that with very little investment in advertisements. For non-profits and small businesses, budgets are tight right now during the pandemic; so, I love being able to help them save money and still create a great space for digital dialogue.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success has been fluid for me, and it changes as my business grows. At first, success was just “getting a paying client” (and I’m sure all business owners have been there at some point). Now, my idea of success is when my clients are so happy with my service that they tell their friends and family to look to BiteSized for their digital marketing needs. My next goal is to be able to make some of these services even more accessible by creating digital products for companies to use like marketing calendar templates and social media analytics trackers. I will know that BiteSized is successful once I’ve been able to give non-profits and start-ups the road map to find their core clients and easily build meaningful connections.
