Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Jacobsen.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lauren. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in the rolling hills of northern California nestled between Mother Nature’s outdoor buffet of beautiful beaches, giant redwoods, crisp snowy mountains, and subtle desert areas. What I saw, touched and smelled every day inspired me and made me appreciate all the sensory dishes that nature has to offer. I was also inspired by my grandmother, Charla Vesta Culpepper. It was through my grandmother’s eclectic way that she blended styles in her home that I first saw how important surroundings were and how they help to tell your story. She had a beautiful flower garden from which would cut flowers and arrange them in a special vase to tell a story. We would then find the ideal spot to display them.
My grandmother also helped me to understand how to create meaningful stories for my clients with beautiful style and touches of nature. Even though my career began in advertising, television, print, and fashion, I was involved in designing the executive offices at the Walt Disney Company along with the homes of many friends. In 2003 I opened Lauren Jacobsen Interior Design.
The homes that I create are a blend of traditional, with its rich sense of history, and modern, with its clean lines, mixed with elegantly infused inspirations from nature. The final statement is one that makes the homeowner feel warm, calm and connected in their lives.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I knew that being an interior designer and owning my own company was not as easy as it looked. Even though I already had a Communications Arts degree from San Diego State University, I went back to school and took interior design classes to learn the 3D level of design. The more I learned, the more I knew I had made the correct decision to switch careers and enter into the interior design world. I also needed to learn how to run a business which was not taught in design school. I had to understand managing a budget and my time, how to charge for my services, to invoice and set up payroll for my employees. As my business grew, I created a website, blog, and newsletter, to keep in touch with my clients, both past and future. Being the CEO, much of my time is spent on the business side but I continue to work closely with my design team to achieve the best possible results for our clients.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moments of my interior design career are always when my clients tell me that they “LOVE” their home once I have completed their project. There is really nothing like knowing you have changed someone’s life for the better and made their dream a reality.
