Meet Lauren Cameron of Via Saviene in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Cameron.

Lauren, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As far back as I can remember, I’ve always been a creative “Jane-of-all-trades, master of none” type. The only thing I knew entering college was that I was creative and loved fashion (but of course, wasn’t specialized or wanted to be specific to fashion design). That’s always been one complex aspect of being “creative” – it holds an array of definitions often incongruous with different people, and it took many contrasting experiences for me to define creativity for myself. During this pursuit, I attended the Fashion Institute of Design + Merchandising, Los Angeles and being a Visual Communications major, I quickly realized that being a creative generalist could actually work to my advantage professionally. My goal swiftly became finding a career path in which I could do a little bit of everything creatively.

I hit the ground running once graduated, and jumped through different companies over five years. I had extraordinary exposure to different types of creative work; Interning at Vogue Australia, working production for fashion shows, interior design, marketing for a local non-profit, etc.

Fast forward to today, leading the digital marketing efforts at Via Saviene. I’ve realized that being creative is so much more than posting beautiful photos, having cohesive filters, and artistic execution. My definition of creativity has shifted to something that resembles; uncovering insights that inform strategy, streamlining processes, and cultivating community… in addition to creating compelling brand narratives. It’s been a learning process and a time of growth for sure, and I’m so grateful to be a part of a great team that allows me to work within my strengths, and encourages “outside of the box” thinking.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Creative work is very subjective and hard to measure, so I’ve struggled along the way in that aspect. Realizing that not everything I put out into the world has tangible ROI has made it tough to find validation in what I’m creating (especially in a saturated market with ever-changing social media API’s). However, regardless of the non-palpable rate of return, everything is a brand building process. Just because there are not metrics attached to a project or process does not make the work invaluable. And, in time, I’ve seen the return in other ways, such as relationship, brand recognition, and so on.

Please tell us about Via Saviene.
The reason I started at Via Saviene is that it’s a jewelry company that celebrates the multidimensional, modern woman. As a brand, the team took the time to keenly study women and their relationship to jewelry. The team has examined functionality, versatility, quality, and design and have built something that I’m so excited to be part of. What I do is manage creative content. That looks a bit different every day but includes: campaign planning, shooting, editing, and planning content for social media, shot list coordination for branded photoshoots, visual display for events, copywriting, etc. I essentially have the opportunity to embrace the slow-fashion movement, celebrate modern women, and stand behind something that’s true quality in design and craftsmanship. (Did I mention I get to wear the samples?) In my world, it doesn’t get much better than that. I’m so grateful to work in an environment where I can continue my career path and education to be a learned, proud, creative generalist.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
As I look back, I wish I had learned how to say, “no” earlier throughout the creative process. I used to think that saying “no” meant I wasn’t a capable or willing team player – but what I’ve come to be true is that it makes me a better team-player (+ saves time, money and energy) when I’m able to communicate the times that I’m not working in my strengths. The ability to be courageously vulnerable in regards to work is not something I connect with shame. I look back and wish I would have implemented it sooner, however, it takes time to build confidence; During that season I was earning the confidence I have to say “no” now.
