Meet Larry Payne Ph.D. of Samata International Yoga and Health Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry Payne Ph.D.

Larry, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 1978 I was as adverting executive for McCalls Magazine. A back problem led me to my first Yoga Class. I was hooked from the first class and never looked back. I took a year sabbatical around the world visiting Yoga teachers and healers in 11 countries in 1979/80 and met the great Yoga teachers in India while they were still alive… Came back to Los Angeles and founded Samata Yoga Center in 1980.

Because of my marketing background, I was involved in starting or supporting almost all of the well know Yoga organization today including The Yoga Journal, Yoga Alliance, and the International Association of Yoga Therapist. Also founded the Corporate Yoga program at the J. Paul Getty Museum, the first Yoga teacher to offer Yoga classes at the World Economic Forum in Davos, co-founder of the yoga curriculum at UCLA’s School of Medicine. For the last 12 years founding director of the Yoga therapy Rx and Prime of Life Yoga programs at Yoga therapy certification program at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

Co-author of 5 books including International bestseller “Yoga for Dummies” and most recently “Yoga Therapy and Integrative Medicine ”

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Academia and corporate procedures are often a struggle when you are a pioneer in a new field. The International Association of Yoga Therapist is on the verge of considering licensing so the standards are very high and demanding of everyone’s time in administration.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Samata International Yoga and Health Center story. Tell us more about the business.
I feel I covered this in the beginning bio but in a nutshell. I am a Yoga teacher, Yoga therapist, Yoga administrator and author.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
It has been good luck all the way so feels like a destiny.
