Meet Krista Everage of Everage Design in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krista Everage.

Krista grew up on the northern shore of Lake Michigan surrounded by wild beauty and Victorian architecture, the daughter of a fine artist and a mechanical engineer. She bee-lined it to the 5 year interior architecture program at the college of design, architecture and art (university of Cincinnati), where she met her husband and design partner, John Everage (a fine art major). After John completed his mfa at the school of the art institute of Chicago, and Krista graduated valedictorian, they married and moved to Los Angeles. John painted the Californian landscape for a few years while Krista worked for two great design firms. Her first residential project in the palisades for William Janss, a mix of modern, European and ethnic influences (with Johannes van Tilburg architect) was published in Architectural Digest in 1986, thus spring boarding Everage Design. Krista and John have created California Romantic interiors in all styles from modern to casually traditional, mixing the comfort of California living with an eclectic mix of materials and styles, and always an artful eye and respect for architectural detail. Krista believes lighting, both natural and well-positioned accents, is key for a successful interior, along with addressing all of the 5 senses and 4 elements of nature. In love with textural natural materials, the Everage’s also embrace rich color, which can lift a mood. They mix doses of fine art and vintage, antique and modern furnishings with custom designed (and L.A. made) upholstery, tables and lighting in luxe materials. (Everage: design workshop) Krista’s love of textiles spans the range of ethereal to old world. She has also created two coconut wax candle scents to enrich everyday living. She also creates many fine jewelry pieces in her downtown workshop (“Krista everage studio, beautiful jewels”) to adorn her clients, and her and her daughters- goddesses all, enjoying life!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have been incredibly blessed with wonderful fun and curious clients who have a fabulous vision of a full vivacious life. The biggest challenge was raising two daughters while working on fabulous but time consuming projects. The girls are grown now, and in fact our youngest, Eva, has been our senior design assistant since graduating from NYU and returning to Santa Monica. Our oldest, Erica, is a fine artist (as well as an actress, writer, and dancer) and creates special projects for us, such as cast bronze finials for our Italianate iron four poster bed, stone carvings for bad relief architectural details, large scale paintings and sublimely beautiful figure drawings.

Everage Design Inc – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Everage design is known for incredible attention to detail and customer service while creating artful interiors that directly reflect our client’s dreams. We are currently finishing a ground up construction residence in the palisades that has many original everage: design workshop pieces as well as a custom two story stair case silk and wool runner that looks like a stream is flowing down the steps. We also are creating romantic and ethereal murals for the stair case, entry and dining rooms. We are also known for our knowledge and respect for architecturally significant homes, of which we have restored many (one is a 1920’s Paul Williams Spanish colonial revival in la Canada that is in the registry of historic homes). We have restored and furnished Gerard Colcords, AF Liechts, and many period homes, including mid-century Modern’s. We have done two homes for Dennis Quaid, one a French farm house style in rustic canyon, published in architectural digest, and the other a 1920’s Spanish colonial revival. both with very electric interiors. Currently we are restoring and furnishing a marvelous 1920’s AF Liecht home in Hillsborough for a young and very fun family. We are creating a magical kitchen there as well, and a gourmet outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven, lounge, dining area and luscious poolside furnishings. The style there includes a very rich color palette, mid-century Murano lighting and a mix of rustic and glam. The biggest factor that sets us apart is that we are fearless, and we have both John and Krista on all projects, with their skill sets covering everything from architectural details to fine art.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for us is holding up the three classical tenets of truth beauty and goodness. We strive to create breathtaking beauty while pouring love into our work, and bringing out the best in everyone on the project, and being straightforward and earnest in all matters. We sleep well at night.
