Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Slane.
Hi Kim, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I had my first camera in my hand when I was six years old. It was a 110 mm camera and took terrible photos! I saw the beauty in capturing facial expressions from a young age. Something about freezing the moment right then is what captivated me. I enjoyed posing people in fun ways and making them smile. Life is often so busy and looking back on photos throughout the year is the only thing that helps to remember the details. From then on, I was always taking pictures of friends, family, travels. That grew to offering friends photo sessions for engagements, maternity, family, and baby portraits. I dappled in studio lighting but decided my love was the outdoors. Before long, friends told other friends and I developed my small client base. Currently, I offer photography sessions on the weekends at various Orange County park locations. Photography is my passion and always will be. The best thing about memories is making them!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the road can be as smooth or as rough as you perceive it to be. There is a large pool of talent in the Orange County area and that talent has always made me feel a little intimidated. That intimidation can make you doubt your skills and ability. Other than intimidation, the weather can always be a possible issue if it doesn’t cooperate. However, sometimes the weather temper tantrums make for the best photo opps!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in portraiture. All kinds including family, engagement, graduation, headshots, and maternity. I am most proud of my engagement and maternity photos because I can usually feel the love that the people I’m photographing have for one another and I work with that to incorporate it into each shot as much as possible. And that right there is what sets me apart. It’s not photographing only the people but the moments they wish to preserve.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
One thing I always tell my clients is to be yourself and take in the moments of photography sessions. There is a reason you’re choosing to have a photo session so live in it: be yourself and most importantly, have fun!
