Meet Kim Lucian of Design Confetti in San Francisco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Lucian.

Kim, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was always a creative kid and gravitated toward art and writing. In high school, I discovered photography and realized it was something I could make a career out of. Once I decided to pursue it I never really looked back. In my early twenties, I rediscovered writing when I started working as a contributor to a popular design blog, and it felt natural to marry the two. It allows me to document things from more that one angle and enables me to explore the things that I’m most interested in. Interior design and fashion are the two areas I focus on, and I’ve learned a lot just by working behind the scenes; shooting and styling in some really amazing places alongside some seriously talented people.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
While it definitely has had some highs and lows, more than anything my path hasn’t been a perfectly linear one. That said, when I look back, I can see how every step has enabled and informed where I am today, and I’ve had a lot of amazing experiences along the way. The biggest setback for me in the past few years was going through two very complicated pregnancies. I suffered from Hyperemesis Gravidarum with both, alongside complications that led to preterm labor and earned me quite a few hospital stays and two lengthy stints on bedrest. The first time around was probably the most isolating thing I’ve gone through, and I was unable to work. With my recent pregnancy, however, I had just launched my blog, Design Confetti, and it gave me a great creative outlet. Spending eight straight weeks confined to bed gave me a lot of time to write and to think about what direction I wanted to move in creatively and professionally. I also found an amazing amount of support both through the blog and social media that helped to lift me up when I needed it most.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I launched my blog Design Confetti around two years ago, but I’ve been working as a contributor to other publications for over a decade. When I first started out, the landscape was very different, it was less polished, but it was exciting, and the industry was much less saturated. I’ve worked mostly around interiors and fashion and have always been interested in how the two intersect. Much like writing and photography, I’ve found it pretty fluid to move between the two. My tag line is a “San Francisco based lifestyle blog featuring home, style, and design news for modern families,” which I believe is a pretty apt description of what I do with the blog. I bring what I’ve learned from working in the industry and staying plugged into the design world to my readers through the lens of my own personality and experience. We recently purchased a one hundred and twenty-year-old Victorian with beautiful bones but some serious quirks, so I’ll be blogging my way through making the house our home without erasing too much of its character and history.

What were you like growing up?
I was a creative kid and I tried my hand at almost everything, from drawing and painting to more obscure crafts like paper cutting and origami. While they probably weren’t the coolest hobbies at the time, it has made me versatile, and I am pretty fearless now with tackling DIY projects and home renovations myself. I was also a voracious reader, spending a lot of time at my local library as a kid and hanging out at Barnes and Noble as a teen. I loved that I could find a book on nearly any subject that interested me and teach myself about it. When I first became interested in design, I would save up for beautiful coffee table books and spend hours studying them. I come from a generation that looked to magazines for inspiration, and I still love leafing through a good one with a cup of coffee in hand. Lucky Magazine and Domino were some of my first introductions to the world of fashion and interiors and shaped the way I view them today. I liked how they approached things in a way that was aspirational while still being attainable; you would see a trend like color-blocking and think, “I could do that.” then go digging through your own closet instead of feeling like you needed to run out and buy something new.
