Meet Kevin Horn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Horn.

Kevin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I got into the world of photography and video production when I was a teenager in Minnesota. I started out by making skate films with my friends in high school, which eventually led to a deeper interest in narrative filmmaking. I majored in Cinematography in college in Minneapolis and started shooting feature films right out the gate. Since then, I’ve shot three feature films, dozens of short films, music videos for artists like Atmosphere, Doomtree, and S. Carey, and commercials for Target, 3M, Fiat, Jameson, and more. In between jobs I also make photography books. I released my first photo book “Day & Night” in 2015, and put out two more books in 2016, “The 5 O’Clock Club” and “Hiatus”. In 2017, I decided to shift my love for printed materials into a skateboarding magazine, and I started Anomaly. Anomaly is an independent magazine focused on skateboarding and its peripherals, and I just recently released the 3rd issue.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road, but if it were, it wouldn’t be that interesting to me. I appreciate the challenges that my industry presents and I feel like each one is a learning opportunity. I started out in the film industry at a young age, which can be quite difficult if you want to call yourself a Cinematographer. I’ve always been very confident, and I’m proud of my work, but it can be tough to sell yourself when people see how young you are; they expect a certain lack of experience, though I feel like I’ve been able to accomplish and grow a lot even at a young age.

When it comes to Anomaly, it’s been a challenge since day one because I’m spearheading it almost entirely alone. I fund everything and produce about 99% of the content, with a little bit of help from a couple of friends. Since it’s just a passion project, it takes a lot of drive and motivation to complete things on schedule. I don’t have anyone but myself pressuring me to go out and shoot photos, or write articles, so when I’m feeling uninspired, it can be quite a daunting task.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a Cinematographer by day, and a Photographer/Editor in Chief by night. I make a living shooting films, music videos, and commercials, and use that to help bankroll Anomaly. In the film industry, I’ve been able to make strides with some of the films and commercials I’ve shot. I’ve been lucky enough to shoot some bigger campaigns for Target over the years, and that’s helped me afford to make the skateboarding magazine and photo books. In the photo world, I’m probably best known for my photo book “The 5 O’Clock Club”, which has a distinct look and style to it. I shoot most of my work on 35mm and medium format film and utilize high contrast natural light, so I think people know my work when they see it.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I just recently relocated to Los Angeles from Minneapolis, so this year is all a big change for me. My goals are to move up in the film industry and start shooting larger projects and work with new directors out here. My five years goal is to be shooting feature films more regularly, while still shooting music videos and commercials in between. I’m working on issue 4 of Anomaly right now but I’m not putting a ton of pressure on myself this time around. I want it to come organically and really take my time, especially because I’m in a new city. I’m looking forward to all of the new images I will create in the coming days, weeks, years, etc. I just love creating images of all shapes and forms and am happy to be doing it in a new place.
