Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Green.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
So I have been playing music since I was six years old. I started on piano and expanded to cello, violin, and guitar over the course of about 12 years. I played in various orchestras, which led me to the stage at Carnegie Hall twice. After playing music for so long, I wanted to find more ways to make it my own. When I was 14, I was introduced to djing by my father, who had set up a pair of turntables he got from his friend in his kitchen. I took a liking to them instantly. When I turned 16, I got the first pair of my own turntables, and I have been booking gigs and sharpening my craft ever since. I hooked up with Jet Life when I was in college at Loyola University and grew with them until ultimately having toured with Curren$y, TY, and Fendi P as their dj three times and counting. I am currently Jet Life’s official dj.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has absolutely had its bumps. As a lady in a male-dominated industry, I have in some ways had to fight my way through, but my femininity works for me sometimes. It’s definitely up and down. I’m down for the ride though. I’m sure there will be more obstacles as I climb my way to the top.
What should we know about your work? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am an all-around musician but currently specifically working as Jet Life’s official dj and a house producer. I have toured with Jet Life in addition to performing at various festivals including Chalice, Rolling Loud (3x), and New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. As a dj, I am most proud of my confidence to go outside the box. I don’t mind experimenting with different sounds and effects and methods of mixing… this is how you grow!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is making dreams come true for yourself. There are things I have foreseen for myself since I was a child and every time I have a moment of accomplishment of something I’ve always dreamed of, that is what I imagine success to feel like. That wave of “yes, I did it!” you feel when you accomplish your goals. That is success.
