Today we’d like to introduce you to Keegan Dunn.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a child, I was always creative and full of energy. I loved theatrics and creating things, I was totally convinced I was going to be a pop star. I had a camera in my hand all throughout my early years, whether it was a toy camera, a film disposable or my first digital Canon point and shoot, given to me by my dad. But it wasn’t until the beginning of my teenage years that I picked up a DSLR camera, and realized that the thrill of pressing that little round button, was a feeling I needed to explore the rest of my life. It’s cheesy but true. So ever since I was 13, I’ve been forcing my friends and colleagues to dress up and get in front of my lens. I’m always having fun, and I think that translates in the current work I’m doing. Today, I am 23 and about to graduate with my Bachelors in Fine Art from Art Center College of Design.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think more challenges will arise after I graduate when have to continuing finding work and growing as a freelancer! Growing up, I always knew I was going to get a college degree, as education is very important in my family. Though I still felt like I was taking a huge leap in choosing a creative path as my career. I knew it would take a lot of hard work and tough skin. But after two years at a community college, I decided I wanted this to be my life and submitted my portfolio to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. A week later, I was admitted! I finally felt like my talent was validated, and I was eager to get started.
Being a freelancer is definitely a big challenge in itself. It is so different from what 90% of my friends do, but I really love the independence. I have to learn how to price myself, market myself, and support myself. Which really has been a struggle to understand and implement in my life. It’s a responsibility that can be misunderstood, but it gives me the opportunity to constantly be meeting new people and pushing myself to do better. I’m struck with new inspiration with each new day! I know it’s going to take hard work and that it isn’t the ‘safest’ option, but I’m excited for the challenge.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a Photographer that specializes in lifestyle and portraiture, so I absolutely love working with people. I am known for the energy and playfulness I bring to sets, and a warmth that makes people feel comfortable. I like to work on location, using the power of the sun to create a youthful and bright image. I produce fresh, colorful and honest work for brands and clients, focusing on the relationships and narratives of the moment. Something that reflects a feeling they want to convey, or just something makes people happy! That’s really the main goal to make people smile and to love themselves.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is the perfect city for creatives. The whole film/photo/fashion industry has a major presence here, so the opportunities are essentially endless. Even if you’re just starting out, or dabbling with different interests, there is a myriad of schools, jobs, and people to throw yourself at. People come here from all around the country looking for a chance, it’s actually really inspiring! It’s great meeting people and sharing stories or bonding with them over the struggle. Knowing we’re in it together, makes it all a little easier to manage! As long as you’re willing to be yourself, be kind, and work your butt off, you’re bound to start something.
