Meet Kay Cola of OrganiGrowHairCo in Downtown LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Cola.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It all started with an extremely bad haircut. I was fed up from years of awful extensions and color damage from coloring. My hair was dry brittle, lacked volume, strength, length, it was a mess. I was already desperate to grow my natural hair back when my five years old daughter asked if she could start treating her hair. I didn’t want her growing up thinking she had to change her natural look to meet society’s definition of beauty. That was my breaking point.

I couldn’t find any non-toxic products on the market for my hair porosity, so I began researching and experimenting with different ingredients. After a few years, I was able to not only grow my hair but I had curls that were far beyond my expectations! The shine was restored and for the first time, I had the fullness and massive volume I craved. With the product formulas finished, now I had to launch.

I’ve always been incredibly independent, so I knew I wouldn’t be seeking investors or financial backing to help launch OrganiGrowHairCo. I took a huge risk when I invested my entire savings, but it paid off. We had a positive response for the start. Through word of mouth and the power of social media, OrganiGrowHairCo earned one million dollars in its first year. Since then, the company has seen consistent growth year after year, I’ve expanded the brand to include Glow for skin and GoLife for lifestyle supplements. In September we introduced online yoga and meditation classes. Next month will see a roll out of clothing and more lifestyle products.

Has it been a smooth road?
My road has been anything but smooth. When I started OrganiGrowHairCo, I had no experience managing a business or developing products and I drained my savings to launch the company. I literally had to learn everything along the way. The silver lining is that you have to take risks and make mistakes in order to grow. Launching was a risk in itself without investors or any money to fall back on. When we started receiving orders and becoming profitable, that opened up a new set of challenges. I needed to scale production, hire employees to manage customer services, payroll, web development, marketing, etc. I’m still faced with challenges everyday – I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the best at balancing my work and personal life balance; Covid-19 has been an adjustment for everyone. As an entrepreneur and human, I’m evolving everyday and figuring out what works best for me and my family.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with OrganiGrowHairCo – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
OrganiCo started with OrganiGrowHair, a line of non-toxic, organic and vegan products for every all hair porosity, from stick straight to tight coils. The company has since expanded to include multiple brands, GlowSkin and GoLife. We are committed to making products from all-natural ingredients and making them available for everyone.

The fact that we’ve never compromised our pledge to remain natural and non-toxic is something I’m incredibly proud of. It doesn’t come without challenges, our research and development process is longer, but it’s what we believe and what our customers expect.

As an Afro-Latina women, I’ve been faced with countless roadblocks and witnessed the effects of inequality in life and careers. Something that most people don’t know is that OrganiCo is 100% black and brown employed. I feel very blessed to provide careers to people who may not have had opportunities elsewhere.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
As a mother of three, family is the most important thing in my life. My definition of success is the ability to take care of your family and set up generational wealth without compromising my moral compass. I also feel incredibly blessed that I’m able to give back to those in need through my philanthropy and charity work. My company has provided me the opportunity to give jobs to people who are often overlooked. There’s immense wealth out there that just sits in a bank or is wasted on frivolous things. Success is humbling and it brings me great joy to share that success with others.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I’m born and raised LA native. I love everything about my city, but the vibes have completely changed with gentrification and COVID. They have knocked down our major Landmarks House of Blues Sunset, our Fox hills mall is not the same and even the Slauson Crenshaw district is not the same. I wish my kids could grow up in the LA I grew up in. The vibe was unmatched.
