Meet Katrina Nable-Villa of KV Interiors in Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Nable-Villa.

Katrina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in the Philippines. I knew that I wanted to be in the arts at a very young age. When I was 12 (maybe 13), I remember sketching a bunk bed and asked my father if he could make it. It was one of the many DIY projects we shared. My first job was to head a product development team where I designed furniture and accessories mainly for export. I thought I found my passion. Then, I moved to Singapore, where the interior architecture of homes was a primary focus—working for several design firms embedded in me the value of aesthetics and structure.  The moving bug bit me again, and now, for 20+ years, I’ve called LA my home.

Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth? Not so. It wasn’t always easy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Moving here to the US was a bit of a culture shock and the closest family I had lived in San Diego. I was newly married, had no friends; it was lonely! I couldn’t work at first so I waited. I missed designing so much that I went back to school to complete an interior design course at the UCLA Extension. When I finally started working, I joined a design firm and traveled all over the US, designing homes, showrooms, and met so many interesting personalities. It was hectic, but I loved it! After six years of working for someone else, I knew it was time to launch my own company. The uncertainly was daunting but it was worth the risk. My husband played a big part in my “taking the plunge.” He was my #1 enthusiastic supporter! I kept telling myself, all I need is one client! Well, that one client is now a good friend and I’ve done three homes for them.

We’d love to hear more about KV Interiors.
My firm KV Interiors, is in the business of creating beautiful spaces! We specialize in turn-key, high-end, residential but we also work on specialty hospitality. I like to get involved in designing a home from the ground up, bare-bones to the furniture and accessories selection. What I’m most proud of is the level of service we provide—the attention to detail and care we put into every project we are a part of. What sets me apart is the range of design styles I can create. Although I love traditional, I also love contemporary spaces. I love being able to mix the old with the new, and I’m not afraid to do it.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is a fantastic city with so many possibilities and opportunities for anyone starting in the interior design business. Diversity makes it even more interesting. There is always someone building, renovating, or re-decorating. But, I won’t lie to you; it can be challenging. You need to carve a niche out for yourself and own it!
