Meet Karlo Gomez of SundayMorningView Magazine in Arts District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karlo Gomez.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Yes, SMV is run by a man! 😱 I founded SMV a women’s online magazine that celebrates the beauty in women back in 2012 as a hashtag #sundaymorningview with my wife Marie. In 2016 it became an online magazine.

The big Q, WHY? I was a FRAUD! Since the inception of my photography career, I created an unrealistic expectation of women, one that didn’t exist in real life.

The model would show up onset with no makeup; to me she was already beautiful, but I covered her natural beauty with 2 hours of contoured makeup and false hair. This was followed with bright lights on her body to remove so called imperfections (cellulite and stretch marks) and if that wasn’t enough, I spent 2-3 hrs per photo, photoshopping it to an unrealistic expectation! It just didn’t feel right! I sold out just to stay current with our beauty standards so I’d get hired.

Nothing existed that showcased what I truly thought was beautiful: a woman with no makeup, messy hair on ☀️ Sunday morning, with a cup of coffee. The truth is that is how I’ve seen my wife for the past 20 years, and I felt everyone should see themselves the way I see my wife, beautiful just the way she is.

SMV always gets comments from women saying, “SMV is owned by a man, enough said goodbye 👋🏾,” or “what does he know about women, he’s a man, this page needs to do better!”

I’m not here to argue, the fact that a man is behind a magazine that supports and uplifts women, says a lot. I hope I can inspire men, women or others to treat women as Goddesses in their natural state, to make them feel like art. I mean, if you love makeup, do your thing! I’m here to show how equally beautiful you are without it.

It is crazy to think, but to me women are beyond empowering and mean the world to me, enough to dedicate my whole career to uplifting them.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has never been a smooth road, I also think the best roads are when you go off roading, that kind of terrain makes you resilient. Being a man running a women’s online magazine comes with its fair share of people’s unsolicited opinions. If you let all these opinions affect you then undoubtedly you and your business will crumble!

Please tell us about SundayMorningView Magazine.
We are the first online magazine that celebrates the women you see in dressing rooms that mainstream media never portrays. SMV is all about celebrating what’s considered as imperfections such as: stretch marks, cellulite, freckles, tummy rolls, melanin, different ethnicities, and body shapes out of the ideal body standard norm. To SMV, this is beautiful and artistic. This is what we are known for, as the magazine that’s REAL.

I am proud that everyday we are changing the mindset on what true beauty is. It isn’t people’s fault that we have been conditioned to think beauty comes in a one size fits all package. True beauty is outside of that conditioned package, that is where the magic can be found.

Receiving countless emails and DM’s of how women are wearing a bathing for the first time, or celebrating their stretch marks or feeling confident enough to dance in front of their mirror like no now is looking, this is what I am most proud of.

The fact that we celebrate women with NO makeup, messy hair on a Sunday morning with a cup of coffee as the epitome of beauty, is what sets us apart. That to us is a SundayGirl, she’s the real deal Hollyfield.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck! You get what you put into life, Karma baby!! Instead, I believe in being blessed. I am blessed that I was born in LA with a loving family and food on the table with a roof over my head and an education. I could’ve been born as a cricket down south or in a third world country living day by day looking for food instead of counting calories how we do in America. This is why I am blessed.

Luck doesn’t exist, rather, it is when preparation meets opportunity for an impromptu date.
