Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Sugar.
Jill, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been styling and cutting hair since I was a teenager. Even from that early age, I was drawn to the impact a person’s image could have on their confidence, and the rewarding feeling it gave me to have a positive influence on their self-esteem in this way. I worked for years on perfecting my craft, but eventually found myself wanting something more. It was then, by happy accident, that I stumbled onto the field of non-surgical hair replacement.
Non-surgical hair replacement involved all of the elements I loved from my salon styling days, but also included the opportunity to help reverse the life-changing effect that hair loss has on a person’s life. It wasn’t long after beginning in this new area that I realized non-surgical hair replacement would become my life’s passion and professional calling.
I maintained my traditional salon customers while pouring myself into the world of non- surgical hair replacement, but eventually the time demands meant I had to give up my salon clientele, which was extremely hard given the relationships I had formed over the years.
As it turned out, 10 of my salon clients refused to leave and stayed with me while I worked to build my non-surgical hair clientele. Though this work remained continually fulfilling, I eventually became disappointed with the service level and type of environment that my customers endured at the hair replacement salon. The loss of your hair is such a personal and sensitive thing to go through, and I felt strongly that my clients deserved more respect and cleanliness than could be provided in that particular salon environment.
This feeling became the seed for the creation of Thursday’s, which, along with my husband’s love, support, and driving spirit helped turn it into a business reality. But to really understand how Thursday’s came to be, I have to go back just a bit in my story. It begins with a romance.
A number of years ago, I began receiving bouquets of flowers at the salon from a secret admirer. This began one Thursday with a stunning arrangement, and continued without fail every Thursday after that. The first delivery came with a charming note inviting me to dinner, which although flattering, was not something I was looking for at the time. Still, my assistant was fascinated, and determined to figure out who this mystery man was.
After a good bit of detective work, we had figured out Mr. X was one of my longtime salon clients. So, I decided to have a little fun with this information, and one evening as I was finishing up his appointment, I decided to see if he’d like to grab some drinks. At first, he looked like he’d seen a ghost, then said, “Sure, where would you like to go?” I mentioned the exact restaurant he had described in his original secret admirer note, and at that moment he knew that I knew. That night kicked off a whirlwind romance and our great story. I had always maintained a deep respect and fondness for him in our professional relationship, but now I learned that he was not only smart, but wonderful, kind, and compassionate. We started dating on Thursday nights. That was our day. The flowers, lunches, and gifts always arrived on Thursdays, how romantic, right?
Four years later we were married on a beach in Fiji, on a Thursday of course. And we opened our business, Thursday’s, in 2001, on yet another wonderful Thursday. That is how this amazing company came to be.
Please tell us about Thursday’s.
Thursday’s is a salon and spa that specializes in non-surgical hair restoration. In terms of hair loss, this can range from thinning hair or the beginning stages of balding, to the effects of trichotillomania or complete hair loss due to something like chemotherapy. All of our clients begin with a custom consultation and scalp analysis, which is the basis for the customized program we develop. While this level of detail sets us apart, the two biggest things that make Thursday’s so different are the quality and care we bring to every client.
Each hair system we create is handmade, using only the finest human hair. Our hair loss specialists have decades of experience with non-surgical hair replacement, and what we prize most is the sensitivity and respect shown to our clients. All treatment rooms are private, giving clients the confidence to not feel self-conscious about their surroundings, which is a big part of the reason why Thursday’s is both a salon and spa. Our overall environment understands, and allows clients that might be too shy to explain their hair to truly relax and enjoy a range of spa services – from facials to wet room treatments like volcanic and rose clay applications.
I’m most proud of, and the feeling that continues driving me to this day, is in knowing that we are improving people’s lives in a very significant way – a way, for some, that they did not believe was possible. Clients are telling us all the time that their confidence is back and they look and feel younger. This is especially touching when a client is battling a medical condition that has affected their hair, knowing that the confidence and peace of mind we provided them has meant so much in their life. There are lots of happy tears shed when the letters of thanks come in, and not just by me, our entire staff is equally invested in the lives and happiness of our clients. They truly are more like an extended family to us all.
