Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessa Calderon.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I began writing poetry in elementary school. By the age of 12, I had my taste of being an emcee when I applied my poetry to music. My brother and his friends stood in a circle taking turns busting flows. It looked easy. Although I was intimidated, I entered the circle and busted out a rhyme.
The guys all gave me props for my flow. After that, I began my attempts at songwriting. By the age of 16, I was writing and performing hooks and versesfor local rappers. I didn’t take recording or performing as a recording artist serious until 2015. That is when I dropped my first album “Vision of Loveliness.”
Since, I have dropped five singles. My most heard and requested is “Home of The Brave.” Which talks of uncomfortable truths. My latest release is called, “Keep it Breezy.” That song is about a breakup and staying positive. I am Tongva and Chumash which are Native Nations (before America) in So Cal so I mostly perform in Southern California but have been blessed to take my music on the road.
Please tell us about your art.
I write songs, stories, and currently working on a book. The goal with my work is to bring healing and understanding to all people, especially those whose voice has always felt unheard. My songs can be found on all music platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and CDBaby. My music videos can be found on YouTube. And my shows are promoted on my Instagram: Jessa_songwriter, Twitter: TheeLovelyJessa, Facebook: Jessa Calderon and reverbnation: Jessa Calderon.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
To me, success is setting goals and accomplishing them. It’s one thing to say you want to do something. But when you feel it deep inside, that this is something you really want to do, it’s time to set goals and work. I got a job and saved money little by little to get studio time and kept at it until I finally dropped some music and videos. Each time I accomplish a goal, I set another.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My album and songs are available for purchase through CDbaby under my name Jessa Calderon. Also, my tees and singles (which come with my cover as a sticker) are available for purchase at my shows and through IG.
