Meet Jeremy Cowin of Active Stretch Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Cowin.

Hi Jeremy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
About seven years ago, I was expanding my physical therapy practice and was traveling quite a bit between offices for coverage, staff training and overall growth of the business. I had developed back pain from all the driving and while I “knew” how to treat back pain, I just couldn’t seem to get on top of the pain. I saw several other PT’s, Chiro’s, massage therapists, and even a pain specialist, but I only got relief for a few hours if any. I felt that what I needed was a deep stretch, as nothing from the other disciplines really got “deep” to where I was actually having pain. So I did a search for “stretching” and found this place and set up an appointment. I wasn’t expecting much but while on the table, I finally felt that the areas I was having pain were finally being addressed. I left that night completely pain-free and the feeling of pain was gone for two days.

On my next visit, I asked the practitioner – “what is this type of stretching?” and was told it was “Fascial Stretch Therapy.” I went home, looked it up and immediately signed up for a training course and got the last open spot for the following month. This led to me taking all the course work for full certification as a Fascial Stretch Specialist as well as getting an advanced master’s certification in Myoskeletal Alignment work. I have since left my physical therapy practice and am now doing fascial stretching and myoskeletal bodywork full time since it has had such a big impact on my posture and pain management.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The education for the fascia and myoskeletal work has been smooth and consistent and one of the best learning experiences I have ever had. Leaving the physical therapy practice was a big change, not necessarily a struggle. However, going from owning and managing 3 office locations, with 10 staff, down to just me – there has a been huge shift in my own personal life (more free time!) and in building up the new practice – it was just me. I brought 12 years of experience of growing my PT practice into this new adventure and have been able to utilize those skills in building my new business Active Stretch Therapy which really helped me launch this from a part-time gig to being full-time in less than two years during a pandemic.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business name is a good indicator of what I do: Active Stretch Therapy. Both myself and my clients are “active” participants while on my table; during the session, the focus is about body alignment and restoring movement through “stretching” and the overall benefit is “therapeutic” for the body, mind and spirit.

I specialize in helping people get back in touch with their bodies, bring awareness to breath, analyze movement patterns, help reduce pain, restore muscle imbalances, aid in recovery for training – just to name a few. What sets me apart is that I have over 1000 hours of bodywork training from massage therapy, fascial and mysoskeletal training. A lot of stretch franchises only have several hours of video training. Not that one can’t get a good stretch from these places, but I bring more than stretching: I also bring over 30 years of bodywork and physical therapy experience and expertise.

How do you think about luck?
I think luck plays a role in some things in life. However, I am a firm believer that discipline, hard work, good company, good food and a balanced life – will outlast most things associated by luck.
