Meet Jennifer Garman of Hairbyjennyg in Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Garman.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got started into the hair world when I was about 16 in high school. I used to cut my friends hair and do updos for high school formals for all my friends.

Then when I graduated from high school I just kept thinking that I did not want to sit in a classroom again. My mind kept thinking about creating. Creating to me is doing hair.

So I enrolled in beauty school and my life completely shifted from what was expected from my parents aka (college) to what my heart was telling me to do with my life. Thank god I listened because now I have my own studio salon in Sherman Oaks on Ventura boulevard. I work on set, do commercial work, and I couldn’t be happier with the life path I chose.

I’ve been in the hair industry for 14 years now and it just gets better and better everyday. Meeting new clients, and not just that but creating a vision and a look that makes people feel happy. You wear your hair like you wear your clothes. It’s fashion, it’s style and I’m happy to be a part of the creative process of it.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing is smooth in the hair industry, I’ve been fired, hired, cried, laughed at, shy, too outgoing, not outgoing enough, Pretty much every single emotion I’ve experienced being in this industry.

The worst struggle Is to hear your not good enough. When I was younger it felt like my dreams were crushed.

But you get back up, you know your worth, and you keep riding for what you love. You have to believe in yourself then others start to follow, then you blow up into a hair wizard!

Hairbyjennyg – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?

I started my company two years ago because I was tired of being a slave to someone’s else’s company. Someone else’s salon, someone else’s dream.

I wanted to create my own dream for myself, that’s my own, that I could keep close to my heart. That’s exactly what I did, and I have a beautiful salon partner 4the luv of hair who is my soul sister. Together we created a special place for our clients to come and be pampered the way they should be.

I mostly specialize in color and haircuts. I love making people over that is my specialty.

What sets me apart from others is I think I care too much! I’m not fake and to some people sometimes it’s all about the money.

If I have a struggling client I’m more then happy to work with them. It’s all about wanting others to feel good, not what your bank account looks like.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Building my own network, building my own salon, creating my looks, making my family proud I never finished college, making my clients feel good about themselves from the inside out, and living my truth!
