Meet Jeff Kite and Jacklyn Rodman of Sunland Water Gardens in San Fernando Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff kite Jacklyn rodman.

Jeff kite, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The family business of Sunland Water Gardens was started by Jeff’s sister Jacklyn Rodman in 1980. But we have been serving this community far before that. Well actually our family started on this property in the 1960’s as a cactus nursery “Ikenberry cactus and water garden” as well as Famous Amos orange cone. Many old timers will remember Amos Ikenberry.

Jeff has been the manager and right hand man of Jacklyn since he was in elementary school. Learning everything he needed to help run a thriving business.

Over the years we have improved our location adding something new each year.

Sunland Water Gardens is an “Everything for your pond” place.

We grow our own Water lilies, and the best selection in Southern California of every kind of pond, aquatic plant known to man. We have an excellent selection of domestic and imported Koi and goldfish. If you are looking for critters, we have them all. Turtles, frogs, tadpoles, algae eaters, mosquito fish, and anything else you can think of for a happy and healthy pond. We also design, build and maintain ponds.

If you need pond pumps, pond filters, fish food, water conditioners we got it… Everything for you pond!!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being in business so long of course it is not always an easy road.

Health issues, divorce, economic ups and downs as well as all the normal issues that come with a business it has been a challenge. But happily sticking together. We have fought forward and built a great business. We have gotten to see two and three generations of customers families grow and become loyal As well as raised our know children in and around this family business. All of our children have learned the value of hard work and how to run maybe even their own business someday.

Sunland water gardens – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What sets us apart from other businesses is family. We have always and will always
treat our customers as part of the Sunland Water Gardens family. And it makes a difference that we are not here to sell something to a customer -we are to help a friend with a problem or a need. It makes a difference.

Also we are very special as there is no other business that has everything we carry.

Pond design, pond building, pond maintenance, pond supplies, Koi, goldfish, critters, every pond plant and most importantly…. We have experience to really help people with their pond needs. All of our employees have decades of experience… that makes a huge difference

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Being useful in the community and to see how happy what we do makes people is success. Planting something that we see brings a little bit of balance, nature and happiness to people is awesome. Having raised our children being part of a successful business, teaching them work ethic is success.
