Hi Jasmine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! My name is Jasmine CanaIes, I’m an artist and educator from Long Beach, CA. I write -songs, poetry and simply as a form of therapeutic exercise.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve always been a highly sensitive person so I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety at times.
I have a really great support system that has helped me get through some tough times, and big life transitions. Eleven years ago my eldest brother Isaac, who was a musician too, passed away. That moment truly shaped who I am today, and inspired me to express myself the way it feels best- through song.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I love to write! For me, it’s first about the words and then everything else is easy to figure out. It also helps to have so many talented musicians as family and friends. I started writing songs with my dad and siblings at a very young age.
Throughout the years, I just ended up playing in different bands and jam sessions, Fight Club LBC with Via Leaves and friends. Live music and dance are like medicine to me.
For the last three years I was performing my debut solo work “Deva.” I’m currently writing my second album with Kelsey Gonzales, which I’m super excited for everyone to hear soon.
I also just started hosting for “Morning Intentions Radio” on KLBP every Thursday at 7am where I get to talk about cool stuff, and play my favorite tunes.
What matters most to you? Why ?
What matter most to me is truly the well-being of every single being on this planet and our environment. Advocating compassion and an end to corrupt agencies matters to me. We deserve better and can do better as humans.
