Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Mayer.
Jane, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
If you had found me six years ago, this story would have been about a teacher in Los Angeles, doing her best to use theatre and English literature to remind students of the magic of life and the power of a well-crafted poem or essay.
But in the winter of 2013, a major rumbling starting appear in the foundations of my personal life. I began having dreams– prophetic and profound dreams– with messages from parallel lifetimes and different worlds. I began receiving communication from spirits and being drawn, inexplicably started appearing into the sacred and the mystery.
After a couple of years of living my day-to-day lives as a teacher, while spending much of my time outside of the classroom engaging in spiritual practices, hosting moon circles, and visiting shamans and healers, I made the leap and quit my job. I packed up my apartment and left Los Angeles to travel the world, seeking out ancient cultures and indigenous healers. I wanted to seek and understand the Great Mystery that was calling me.
Now, I travel back and forth between Peru and the States, working with my teachers in the Andes Mountains and shepherding retreats for others, and then coming back to Los Angeles to offer ceremony, healing sessions and guidance to those who are waking up to this path.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I laughed out loud when I read this question. Smooth, this road has not been. It has been magical and terrifying and overwhelming– and time and again it has been the only path that calls to me.
Choosing to listen to and follow a shamanic calling in the modern world is much like choosing to take all your clothes off and walk out in public. At every turn on my path, I am faced with my own deepest fears of rejection, of insanity, of loneliness.
Being a living example that it is possible to live outside of the systems humanity has constructed is confronting for people. It peaks their curiosity and triggers their fears. So yes, there have been struggles. But let me say this, directly to those who read this who might be hearing the whispers of the words I am writing, IT IS WORTH IT. Every fear, every challenge, every bump in the road has been worth it.
There is a magic and mystery to this world that defies human understanding. And I am honored and deeply grateful that a profound relationship with that mystery lives at the core of my being today.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jane Is Listening – what should we know?
My service to this world is shamanic healing practices. I work as an intermediary between the spiritual world and the physical world– helping people navigate the ethereal and the material.
What does that mean, in layman’s terms? It means that people come to me with physical illness, mental illness, soul sickness– or deep curiosity. Most of them have reached the end of the solutions that are being offered to them for their sickness or their questions or their pain. They may have intuitive gifts that they don’t know how to use, they may have physical pain that they don’t understand, or they may have a nagging feeling that there is just more to life than their day-to-day lives.
I walk with them through that process, communing with their bodies, spirit guides, soul contracts, past pain and trauma– and use plant medicine, sound healing and multi-dimensional grid work to help them peel back the layers of these challenges and see the deep truth of what is happening.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Humility and courage.
Without the courage I was given and have cultivated, I would have stopped this path a long time ago, and probably succumbed to my own physical illness and spiritual emptiness.
And without humility, I would have thought this was all about me. I am learning, remembering, that I am simply a channel for the divine.
