Meet James Fink of Art Snitch Collection in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Fink.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a rare LA native who grew up around art since I was a kid. My mom is a successful painter herself. I didn’t think much of it until I got into college and took my first photography class. I loved being in the darkroom and found an unexpected appreciation of photography that continues to carry on today.

A couple of years ago, after working in corporate and having taken some time away from photography, I made a big pivot and opened up my own agency. As a stress reliever from some of the pressures that come with entrepreneurship, I made my way back to photography as an outlet. The more I practiced, the more I realized how much I had missed it.

As a photographer, I find Black and White Photography to be timeless. It adds a unique story to a photo relative to color photography. I usually use my Canon Rebel xsi to shoot, however with the technology on just my iPhone, the quality of shots I get have been just as good! I do miss being in the darkroom and watching my photos take life though.

I find the composition of the shot almost, if not more important than the actual subject. In fact, at the right angle and right lighting, you can make any object take on a new life.

I have really enjoyed my journey so far. I am excited to shoot more regularly, meet talented fellow photographers, and have my work be both recognized and enjoyed by fans of photography.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In some ways, my journey thus far has been easy because I’m doing what I love. However, there have also been some challenges. Putting my work out there makes me vulnerable as I know not everyone will like it. It never feels good to have your work rejected. Additionally, I haven’t figured out a way to leave my agency work and support myself being a full time photographer.

Please tell us about Art Snitch Collection.
As I had said earlier, I run a digital ad agency and it is all business. I like to think of Art Snitch Collection as my fun, alter-ego where I get to create this black and white world through my photos.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite memories was when my Dad somehow got bootleg VHS tapes of the original Star Wars movies before it was available to the public. Back in the “old days” movies didn’t come out on video for sometimes several years after they were in the theaters. We had all three Star Wars films before any of our friends did. My brother and I used to watch them over and over again. Our mom would often catch us jumping around the living room acting out every scene and quoting every line.
