Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Tovar.
Jacob, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My first camera was an iPhone 3gs, I started taking photos of my books and notebooks symmetrically placed on my desk, and I was always the friend who was behind the pack taking photos of my friends on hikes or other spontaneous day trips. I was introduced to VSCO in 2010 also, from then I started using the iPhone app to edit the photos I took, I fell in love with adding filters and the editing process.
Fast forwarding to summer of 2015, I picked up my moms old Canon Rebel T2i and forced myself to shoot on manual but would fail endlessly until I started studying the functions of the camera and what they did. Through the process of trial and error, I slowly started to grasp the concepts. I started to experiment with portraits and would ask my close friends if they’d want to take photos.
From then on, I started loving working with people and taking portraits. During all of this, I was working at outback steakhouse and pursuing a communications degree. Slowly I started drifting away from the main core classes and starting taking more creative classes. I learned how to develop and process black and white 35mm film. Mixing film and digital has made me fall in love with photography way more.
As a few years when by, I upgraded my camera to a 5D Mark III by canon, and I started to shoot more client work and started to take more time off of my serving job at outback steakhouse. Eventually, in September 2017, I quit my job and slowly dropped school and took on photography full time. Since then I have no regrets in my decisions if anything it was the best decision of my 24 years of life.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of my struggles are gaining clients, balancing passion projects with client work, always progressing and keep trying to move forward with the artistry.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Portraiture is my forte. Mainly in natural light but sometimes I dabble into a studio. I’m humble and proud I can be put into a lot of settings or quality of lights and find a way to make it work.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My work ethic and people skills.
