Meet Jackie Chen of Jackie Chen Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Chen.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jackie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Jackie Chen Design started back in 2007 when I was still a student. I left my family, friends, and entire comfort zone in SoCal to move up North to pursue my dreams. I wasn’t sure at the time exactly what I wanted to do in the art realm so I took every freelance opportunity that came my way to challenge myself as I explored creativity.

Eventually in 2015, when I designed my brother’s wedding stationary, I realized just how much I loved creating meaningful pieces for special moments in people’s lives. It warms my heart to see the happy faces of my clients when they receive a finished product designed with their dreams in mind. That was the moment, I knew that I had found my calling.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Since the beginning of 2018, I feel incredibly fortunate to be blessed with amazing projects and clients. However, the road hasn’t always been easy. Between learning what my exact artistic vision and purpose was in my early years then having some personal matters that needed my immediate attention the last few years, it took some time for everything to all come together. But I am happy to say, as of last year, I have fully expanded my wings.

I am at a place where I can wholeheartedly express myself as an artist and follow my passion completely. I am also truly grateful for all my family and friends who believed in me this entire way. And I am so incredibly blessed by my wonderful clients who trust me to create beautiful pieces for the special moments in their lives. So it’s been a journey to get here, but completely worth it and I am so proud, thankful, and honored to be the owner and creator of Jackie Chen Design today.

Please tell us about Jackie Chen Design.
Jackie Chen Design exists to create and bring what you imagine to life! I spend time to get to know each of my clients on a personal level, in order to bring to life what they imagine for their special moments. I specialize specifically in handwritten calligraphy and custom paper goods.

Custom items range from custom paintings and signage to wedding invitations, place cards, table numbers, and the list goes on. If you want it, I can pretty much create it for you! I am proud of my craft because I enjoy what I do. I am blessed to be working in a field I’ve loved since childhood.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memories always involved my mom and art! My mother, Mama Chen, is my biggest fan and inspiration. She was a middle school art teacher, as well as an artist. Growing up, I was never without an endless selection of art supplies to express my creativity. Weekends at home would involve her laying out giant pieces of paper, almost as big as me, and an array of coloring mediums for me to let my imagination go wild. I can draw/paint for hours on end.

When we do go out on weekends, she would bring sketchbooks along, and of course, she’d prepare a set for me as well. She never imposed her own way on me. She taught me to be patient and attentive to color, to proportions, to textures and etc. I hold those memories dearly to my heart and believe they have a huge impact on who I am today and what I do now.
