Meet J Henry

Today we’d like to introduce you to J Henry.

J, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Born to immigrant parents from Barbados. The youngest of five children, my siblings and I were born in Bedford- Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. I relocated to LA to become a celebrity fitness trainer, own and operate a recovery spa/training facility. As a child I suffered from severe asthma, therefore my mother did not share my same passion for sports. Although, I excelled in athletics my mother forbid me to join any sports team to avoid physical injuries or ailments. I quickly learned if I was going to play sports I would have to be the best. This mentality stuck with me throughout my athletic career in high school and later as a collegiate athlete and independent sprinter. While completing my undergrad degree in Economics, I accepted a position as a Junior Varsity Track & Field Coach. This was the most rewarding job I ever had. It was at this time my passion quickly became my purpose; to help others overcome obstacles and achieve physical greatness. On Jan 2, 2016, I emptied my savings account, sold my car, and rode my motorcycle from San Francisco to LA to become a Celebrity Fitness Trainer. I abandoned a ten years career in the Tech Industry to become a full time fitness professional. I wanted to follow in the foot steps of some of the industry’s great pioneers, hoping to inspire others just as I have been inspired. Ever since I have been devoted to offering premium training servicing as a 2XU & Equinox Fitness Ambassador, Certified Private Trainer, Online Coach and Group Fitness Instructor. I take a less is more approach to training, replacing machine equipment with a variety of anaerobic exercises and progressive techniques that create a training experience unlike any other.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Beginner’s luck for the first six months; booking speaking roles for independent films, enrolled in UCLA Extension’s Acting Program, featured background on a popular sitcom. However, for the next several months I would be living in Air BnB, barely making the rent. At this time I experience extreme financial hardship, slept on a couch in a 1 bedroom apartment in Hollywood for over two years, it was all I could afford. On the bright side, it kept me close to local casting companies for auditions.

Please tell us about your work.
Jtrain Fitness provides superior 1 on 1 training, group, and online exercise with fully customized training programs for all fitness levels. I Specialize in strength conditioning for building lean muscle. Most trainers focus on the end product, I feel the journey is just as important. Using only free weights I teach a variety of progressive techniques and anaerobic exercise that create a training experience unlike any other. Movement is an essential part of life, just like eating and sleeping. I remind clients that your physique is a by product of your decisions, making small good decisions daily makes all the difference.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t change anything, those experiences both good and bad have made me the person I am today. I have faced many of my fears and learned a lot about myself in the process.
