Meet Hollywood Photographer: Violet Schrage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Violet Schrage.

Violet, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My father and mother were always taking photos of us growing up, so I was already very used to having a camera around. At the age of 12, I received a birthday gift of a camera and started taking photos of everything, small mini fashion shoots of my sister and friends, along with documenting my life of course. Later, I had a photo course in highschool which was inspiring, and after the first year of college, I changed majors to photography. I earned my bachelors of fine arts degree from Southern Illinois University. Immediately after college I moved to Hollywood, worked as an assistant, and freelanced different photo jobs. 16 years later photography is my sole profession and still continues to inspire me.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being any type of artist is a struggle I assume, photography is no exception. When I first moved to LA it was touch and go for the first year, before I built a foundation, and got into the swing of things. Freelancing has it’s ups and downs financially, but still happy I chose the job I did, always something interesting to capture and participate in.

Who, or what, deserves a lot of credit for where you are today?
My Mother. She is the one who inspired me to go to school for photography and recognized it as a legit career. There was a particular turning point in my life when I could have gone a variety of directions, her advice steered me towards the path I am grateful to be on now.

Do you have a favorite type of client or project?
I enjoy shooting weddings, some photographers are not crazy about wedding jobs, but I find it inspiring to capture an event that will be remembered and iconized in memory and photos, for a lifetime.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were just starting out?
I would have taken some business and marketing classes.
