Today we’d like to introduce you to Hilow Hirota.
Hilow, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born in Shizuoka, Japan, (near Mt. Fuji) I was always fascinated about America from a young age. I made up my mind and came to the land of dreams. After graduating college, I landed on a gig as a movie editor for several years at a production company. I started to collaborate with friends who requested making YouTube contents for fun. My interest with filming (being a gadgets guy) grew and I was enjoying creating movies from scratch starting from the storyboard. I’ve decided to take a dive into production, starting with events, music videos and then corporate commercials. I thank my Japanese background linguistically and aesthetically which I cross pollinate with the American culture. Currently, I’ve started working on wedding videos. Weddings are not scripted and are more like documentaries. It has its challenges but has its rewards. Like being a part of one of the most special days in a person’s life! I hope to grow my skills and take on new challenges but never forget to have fun working.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Coming to the US has had obstacles in and of itself. Language for starters. It doubled down working in an industry with its own specialized lingo. As movie editor, I’ve specialized in English-Japanese translations. It was always a learning experience to tackle two very diverse languages. However, I believe this strengthened my career and life here in the US.
Behind any seemingly rosy story is a story of struggle and I had my good share of downfalls. As much as I enjoyed transitioning my work from editor to producer (ahem), it was a different story when it came to making it a living. I did not have a marketing experience, a solid clientele base nor the slightest idea where to start. A few sentences let alone even a few paragraphs could not hold my stories of the many battles and defeats. But one thing may be true to all stories and that is there’s always the light at the end of the tunnel as long as you keep on going. I educated myself for this new trade and found online service sites to register, found a sales rep and updated my website. Slowly but surely it feels like I’ve set sale perhaps. I am eager to explore the uncertainty which makes life a little bit more exciting!
