Meet Herve Levy of Griffin Club Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Herve Levy.

Herve, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a graduate of the Lycee Hotelier de Biarritz, France where I received my Bachelor Degree in Hospitality. I moved to the states in 1999 I worked as a server for a couple of years at the L’Auberge Resort and Spa in Del Mar, San Diego, then I was promoted to Restaurant Supervisor, then Director of Restaurants. I then received an offer to work for Hilton Co and secured a position as Director of Food and Beverage for the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort.

When I saw an ad advertising for a Food and Beverage Director at the Altadena Town and Country Club, I was very intrigued by the concept of a country club. Born and raised in France, this is not a typical business so after a few interviews, I received a great offer. I then Moved to Kansas City where I was the Assistant General Manager for the Carriage Club, an exclusive Club in the heart of Mission Hills, KS. Carriage Club is a social club with two clubhouses, three pools, 4 restaurants, an ice rink, 10 tennis court, fitness center etc.. After 5 years working there, I accepted the position as General Manager at the Beverly Hills Country Club, now Griffin Club.

It was a great opportunity for me and my team to witness such a transformation from physical improvement, different culture, membership and expectation. The bar keeps raising and we are all up to the challenge.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Membership did not understand at first what we were trying to do so we were always questioned along the way. Also building a team that ” gets it” was also challenging especially at first. However, as soon as we found better talents, the other ones were learning from the others and the culture started to change.

Griffin Club Los Angeles – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are in the business of serving people. We want to provide the best social experience on the West Coast. We are always learning from our mistakes and we get stronger because of that.

Looking around the area, we are very unique with the amenities that we offer. In fact, I am trying to find a similar club for myself and can’t find it! It’s either a gym or a full-service golf club! We are still an affordable club where families can enjoy their time with their friends and families. We are now a community. Not a simple gym.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Seeing my staff members growing and taking ownership of each of their department. I could see how much they care, and we are now working so hard together, exactly like family members trying to make the family business run.

I am so proud of my staff! Also, I am very proud to work for Meriwether and Singerman. They have been very supportive and I am very loyal to them and their project.
