Today we’d like to introduce you to Karlton Phresh.
Karlton, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am from Grand Rapids, Michigan originally and half of my family also lives in Detroit. Growing up, I was an only child and often called hyperactive or ADHD by my Teachers. I was a hand full in-class and my focus was on acting out stupid scenes for my friends while the teacher was trying to teach the class. I thought it was so hilarious, we all did, I’ve always had a great sense of humor. But in grade school that would often get me sent to the principal’s office. Before you know it my teachers had placed me in remedial classes figuring that I was incapable of learning; when in actuality my mind was simply not being engaged properly. As a youth, I somewhat also believed this to be true myself not knowing any better. I believed I wasn’t good at learning probably up until highschool. When I had my first Theater and Media Production electives. In these classes, it would be the first time I would receive grades nothing less than a B+ or A- average. I thought FINALLY!, something I can excel in, “See I’m not dumb”, I thought. I’m just wired differently. It was from that point I realized I need to play to my strong suits and play those cards excellently well or the world may miscategorize my creative brain for a non-functioning one.
I tell you about that part of my life cause I feel like that situation is one of the main reasons I’m a business owner today.
I started Function Presents in 2018. Mainly existing the entertainment and nightlife world. Preceively being involved in the Downtown Santa Ana Artist Village culture, I was well aware of how to put together events along with DJ and run sound. As a black LGBT artist, I saw an opportunity for more all-inclusive event spaces with a more immersive an authentic edge. In year one, I quickly assembled a small team made up of talented young people who I felt have a unique style, intellect, and drive (David Lorenzo, Rudy Six, Jersey, and Goddess). Our first event as a team was the “Culture Couture Fashion Show” at La Santa Lounge (Santa Ana, CA).
We got to where we are today by articulating and manifesting our dream with precision.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As it goes for our business and what we do, I don’t think we have encountered anything that can stop us. We always continue to live like students. We learn more and grow more, it’s just the process. With that said, I always feel like the challenge of the battle within is the main one, we need to have our eye on. Everything else will magnetize into place if you play it smart and work hard.
Shit happens just outsmart that shit.
Function Presents – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
In our media content creations, we specialize in telling an authentic story through a viewpoint made for the people. Style is super important to us both. We are known for having a unique vision, wild parties you’ll never forget and marketing you can’t take your eyes off of. What I am most proud of right now is that we are an intentionally diverse company. We shoot all backgrounds of models, book all backgrounds of talent, and everyone is welcome to take part at Function Presents. That’s a must for me.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is not a destination or milestone. Success is feeling like your going in the right direction. I also wanna be a Billionaire.
