Today we’d like to introduce you to Dustin Argumedo.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dustin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My whole life, I have always known I wanted to work in the arts, Art was always something that made me feel at home, just working with my hands. When I was in middle school, I would actually get made fun of because everyone would say I dressed nicer than the other kids, they would call me Fashion Designer and I would get super offended. I remember around the time I was 18 I started my first job in fashion retail; I was working at Guess Jeans. That is where I first fell in love with Fashion, the way it would make me feel, the confidence boost I would get from just wearing a shirt. Soon after, I felt like there was a lack of creativity in the menswear department and decided to pursue fashion. I moved to Los Angeles and started my Journey at The Art Institute. I was there for about a year and a half before The Art Institute closed down and we were left to fend for ourselves. From there, I got the amazing opportunity to film a few episodes with Netflix for a new show that’s coming out soon.
After that amazing opportunity, I decided to finish my Fashion degree at FIDM where I have also had the opportunity to start the advanced Fashion program where it’s myself and another eight students doing this program. Where I am now is in the process of doing that program as well as launching my own brand set to launch in November. As a first-generation Mexican American, my journey in the arts have always been ambitious, with the backing of my parents encouraging to always follow my dreams as well as inheriting their work-a-holic tendencies. I am proud with the progress I have done and cannot wait for what the future has in store.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not always been a smooth road, one of the biggest challenges I faced was moving to Los Angeles from a small town to really pursue such a big dream to be a fashion designer. Another obstacle was when the Art Institute closed down, I feel like a lot of my classmates including myself for a minute were taking that as a sign to go in a different direction, but really overcoming that and knowing that it was my dream it only made me want to finish school all that much and it didn’t matter to me what school I finished that in. Another obstacle that has been with me my whole life is being a first-generation Mexican American, I feel like I have to work twice as hard in everything I do as opposed to other people, which only fuels me more to be able to succeed.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
So in my brand that is launching soon, we have really been focused on making good quality garments as opposed to quantity, we will be launching sometime towards the end of November. We are starting with men’s clothing, everything is cut and sewn in my home studio. Our long term goal as a company is to be able to make high fashion clothing that is sustainable to be able to help the earth.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very opposite of what I am now, I used to be very shy and quiet but still friendly. I remember I would try and be on good terms with everyone. I was always interested in the arts, so you could always catch me drawing or painting. For the longest time, I wanted to actually be an architect or interior designer. Like I mentioned before, I would sometimes get made fun of at school being called a fashion designer because they thought I was always dressed nice. I was also very interested in the earth and gardening, I grew up in Woodburn Oregon about half an hour away from Portland, so I remember always taking trips to the forest, camping and gardens.
