Meet Drew Bird of Hatmosphere in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Bird.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Drew. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It started with my dreams. I literally dreamed that hats fell from the sky and as they landed in my hands they took themselves apart and taught me their construction. I never studied hat or costume design it just seemed to come naturally to me.

Working on Broadway, was where I started to get a grasp on construction for the human form. Of course, many of the shows I worked on at the time had nothing to do with human, Cats, Starlight Express, and many other shows popular at the time…

In fact, my taste developed in a way that I found it particularly stimulating to make everything but human.

As I learned, I realized that the theatre world, though lovely was limited. Designing for a film was my calling and thus I came to LA. Over time, I joined the union and have had the amazing opportunity to work with, stunning performers such as Milla Jovovich, Lucy Lu, Snoop Dog, Taraji, Rumer Willis and many others.

Currently, I have a loft showroom in Downtown LA where I receive clients and put together productions. I share it with Lucent Dossier Circus and have the great fortune of coming home to aerialist rehearsals and dance choreography, it’s like living a Fellini movie.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Hollywood is a tough place no doubt. Part of the path is learning how to recognize opportunities and frauds. I don’t know anyone who has not been ripped off at one time or another. It makes you strong, bold, and more determined than ever if you want to survive.

I think one of my biggest struggles is finding a decent priced place to live in this town.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Hatmosphere – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My company is called Hatmosphere, I love to play with words. Hatmosphere is the atmosphere surrounding a hat that promotes quality conversation.

My mantra is as follows:
I create everything beyond your imagination. Thus I am known as a specialty costume designer. I create creatures, aliens and monsters, fantasy, fetish, and beauty from other dimensions. You simply must come to the studio to see

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I have given myself 5 years in which to become one of the top 20 designers sought after for their creativity. I would love to create the look of a Sci-Fi fantasy and work with Guillermo Del Toro and Tim Burton.

I would love to be a part of the movies that will guide people back into being human again.
